Japanese game shows have always been a fascinating spectacle, blending humor, absurdity, and sometimes outright weirdness. A recent video featuring members of the idol group Nogizaka 46 has sparked discussions about the variety and eccentricity of these shows. In the clip, the young women are tasked with simply holding a frog, leading to a mix of exaggerated reactions and genuine discomfort.

The video begins with the girls nervously approaching the frog, trying to muster the courage to hold it. The transcript captures their hesitant dialogue: "いけますはい いくよ せーの すいません はい井上でーす はい ごめんなさい ごめんね 回転しちゃう 動いてるな ノーカウント 待て待て待て どう?

Viewers have had mixed reactions. One comment humorously noted, "Out of all the weird Japanese shows, you chose one where the girls just simply have to hold a frog to call it weird?" Another user added, "That frog is so cute." The frog's adorableness was a common theme, with comments like "Idk why but that toad looks cute..." and "That frog is not even doing anything."

Some viewers compared this tame challenge to more extreme Japanese game shows. One user reminisced about "Be Cute or Get Pie," where contestants must wake up cutely or get a pie in the face. Another mentioned "Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!!," famous for its 24-hour no-laughing batsu games, where laughter results in being smacked with a bat.

The discussion also highlighted how the reactions may be part of the act, especially since Nogizaka 46 members are known for their dramatic personas. A commenter pointed out that these antics are much tamer compared to the group's earlier episodes.

Despite the seemingly mild challenge, the video has captivated audiences, showcasing the unique charm of Japanese variety shows. Whether it's the overly dramatic reactions or the sheer novelty of the task, Nogizaka 46 holding a frog has become another memorable moment in the world of Japanese entertainment.

Out of all the weird Japanese show, you chose one where the girls just simply have to hold a frog to call it weird?

Its always Wednesday in Japan it seems 🐸

I think some of the reactions may be a bit genuine, but they really seem either hugely exaggerated or just straight fake. 3rd girl in particular

The US had fear factor and we're calling japan weird for holding frogs?

Yeah, it's an act - it's all hammed up to 11. Chris Broad (Abroad in Japan, YouTube) included this as one of his 'Ten Things I Hate About Japan' - specifically how in food shows everyone has to be amazed about how tasty something is. On Japanese TV, you can't just say "Oh, that's tasty", you have to be all "OMG THAT'S DELICIOUS I CAN'T BELIEVE IT" and it gets tedious after a while.

These are not the type of Japanese game shows I thought of when seeing the word "weird". This is pretty tame by Japanese standards lol. "Be Cute or Get Pie" is one that I thought of. Women go to "sleep". And when they get woken up by the host, they have to wake up in a cute way or they get a pie to the face. Then there's one where contestants get mummified if they fail to answer questions. A machine wraps their body in cloth. Slowly working its way from the feet to their head. Then there's Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!! and their variety show where they do all sorts of weird stuff. They're most famous for their 24-hour no-laughing batsu games (penalty games). If they laugh, they get smacked with a bat. They also came up with the Silent Library game. Gaki no Tsukai does all sorts of punishment game stuff. And then there are the p***-esque game shows. Like the one where you have to determine which girl is having an o*****. Their lower half is obscured, and they're all moaning. But only one of them has a v******* pressed up against them. One where a goal is to strip a girl in a shower. A girl is having a shower behind a glass panel with different sections and numbers on it. You have to climb up a slippery slope without falling and throw a rubber ball to try and knock out the sections to reveal the girls taking a shower. Or the one where the guy has to sing Karaoke while getting a h******. And he has to sing as best as he can. And possibly my favorite, O***** Wars. Gay men try to make straight men c** with a b******. That's really it. And it is real. Yes, the contestants are p*** stars, but it's not a p*** shoot. It's meant for TV. There's no n***** shown. So yeah, holding a toad seems really tame in comparison to a lot of their other weird game shows lol.

US game shows don't even come close to how fun Japanese game shows look.
