An unusual incident at a hotel has sparked a lively discussion on Reddit, highlighting ongoing service issues in the hospitality industry. An image shared on the platform depicts an overflowing ice machine located in a hallway corner, spilling ice onto the floor. The machine, with its sleek metallic silver and black design, appears to have malfunctioned, resulting in a substantial pile of ice on the tiled floor that extends several feet and even encroaches onto a nearby carpet.

The original poster titled the image "Hotel put me on hold 5 times. Guess they don't care," expressing frustration at being repeatedly placed on hold while attempting to report the issue. This post resonated with many users, who weighed in with their own experiences and opinions.

One user, who identified themselves as a hotel worker, explained the challenges faced during third shifts, where a single employee often juggles multiple tasks and cannot leave the desk at a moment's notice. They mentioned, "There could be an influx of calls and check-ins, making this a problem to be dealt with later."

Another commenter humorously remarked, "Don’t worry, it’ll just be water under the fridge by the morning," while others pointed out the broader problem of understaffing in hotels. One user noted, "Hotels are so understaffed anymore I’m often surprised so many are still open. The front desk person is sometimes the only person working even in mid-size hotels like the Hampton Inn."

Several users suggested practical solutions, such as going directly to the front desk or simply stating the problem quickly when someone answers the phone. "After the second hold, I would have gone down to the front desk," said one commenter, while another recommended, "Why don’t you just say 'your ice machine is dumping ice all over the floor' when they answer?"

The post also drew attention to the heavy workloads and stressful situations hotel employees often handle. One front desk worker shared, "It’s not that we don’t care, it’s just that the person on the phone is a whole lot less up our alley than the person screaming, crying, or bleeding in front of us."

Despite the humorous and sometimes frustrated responses, the incident underscores the ongoing challenges within the hospitality industry, particularly regarding staffing and customer service. As hotels continue to navigate these issues, guests and employees alike are left to cope with the occasional chaos, such as an out-of-control ice machine.

The image and ensuing discussion serve as a reminder of the importance of effective communication and adequate staffing to ensure guest satisfaction and smooth operations in the ever-demanding world of hospitality.

On hold? I'd have told them and hung up. Beyond that I'm not feeling bad. It's not my problem

Hotel worker here. If it's during third shift; more often than not, there is one employee working (me), and leaving the desk at the drop of a hat isn't an option. There could be an influx of calls and checkins, making this a problem to be dealt with later. They also don't leave the cleaning supplies in convenient places that are unlocked, nor leave the keys to those places in effective places (i.e. behind the desk). If this is second shift, their plan is to leave it for third shift.

Hotels are so understaffed anymore in often surprised so many are still open. The front desk person is sometimes the only person working even in mid size hotels like the hampton inn. Not surprised the customer service quality has suffered along with the facilities.

Why don’t you just say “your ice machine is dumping ice all over the floor” when they answer? If they put you on hold after that that’s on them
