A uplifting video titled "En la residencia de ancianos" has recently captivated viewers on Imgur. The video showcases elderly residents engaging in lively activities designed to maintain cognitive and motor skills. The infectious enthusiasm of the participants is palpable as they repeatedly exclaim, "Daar gaat-ie! Ja! Yes! Kom op!" while engaging in a ball game.

This creative approach to elderly care has garnered widespread appreciation. One viewer commented, "I appreciate how creative these activities are to maintain cognitive and motor skill retention," highlighting the importance of such innovative methods. Another user echoed similar sentiments, "Let's make them feel like children all over again. They did it once already."

An occupational ther*****'s spouse shared insights into the daily routines at care facilities, noting, "Wife's an occupational ther*****. This is literally her day with patients. Figure out what fine motor skills they need to work on, and make games out of it." This personal touch emphasizes the dedication and creativity involved in elderly care.

One user nostalgically recalled their mother's care home experience, stating, "My mum's care home cost a fortune but was worth every penny because of stuff like this. Colouring books, crafts, themed meals and events, music, and pets. They knew everyone's favourite magazines and candy bars and TV shows. It all made such a difference."

The video also sparked light-hearted humor, with one viewer quipping, "I love the title.. 'Residence of the ancients'... did a dog invent the Spanish language?" Another user humorously remarked, "Dude Perfect in 30 or 40 years," comparing the residents' activities to the popular trick-shot group.

Notably, the video underscores the importance of recreational nurses in long-term care facilities. A viewer commented, "I work in LTC and hospitals. The Rec nurses are as much heroes as the attendance nurses. Thanks for your help."

The emotional impact of the video was evident in comments like, "Wonderful and sad at the same time. I'm nearing that condition of old age," and "With luck, we will grow old. With more luck, somebody will care." These reflections resonate with many who have experienced similar situations with their loved ones.

The video serves as a reminder of the essential role of social interaction and fun activities in improving the mood and outlook of elderly residents. As one user aptly put it, "On top of motor and cognitive skills, interaction with other people—and just having fun—is so beneficial to mood and outlook on life. And just having something different to do. I saw this with both my mom and my mother-in-law. Kudos to the people who do this work."

Despite the overall positive reception, some viewers expressed preferences for a quieter background, with comments like, "I like it! Would like it even more without the unnecessary music," and "Would be a lot better without that awful music."

Ultimately, the video from this Dutch retirement home showcases not only the creativity and dedication of caregivers but also the joy and benefits such activities bring to elderly residents. Whether it's keeping balloons aloft with pool noodles or enjoying themed events, these activities are a testament to the power of care and compassion in enhancing the lives of the elderly.

I was visiting my father in law once at his memory care facility and the residents were keeping balloons aloft using pool noodles. That is the kind of team building activity I'd like to do at work...why wait until retirement?
