Despite all of its flaws, I can still see glimmers of a good movie buried deep within The Phantom Menace. If only Lucas had someone around him to honestly tell him when his ideas were s***, instead of yes-men.

I saw it yesterday in theaters. The Sixth time I've seen it in theaters. It was the first time I was disappointed at the loudness of the theater. Most movies make me slightly uncomfortable in loudness, but the pod scene didn't shake the walls like it previously had and it was a big let down. Half the fun of that movie in theaters in the pod scene.

A weird part of Phantom Menace is that the Trade Federation blockades Naboo for, like... What, a week? A month? And apparently that's long enough for the population to be starving in the streets. Does Naboo not have farms? Agriculture? It feels weird to imagine so lush a planet that it can support not one but *multiple* superpredators would not sustain agriculture. Overthinking, I know, but it's still weird, right?

Unpopular opinion: the prequels and postquels are all trash that never should have been made. The writing got worse and worse as time went on. Just because you made something great doesn't mean you should keep making it until it sucks. Quit while you're ahead. Its not surprising that a mega rich corp bought out the franchise and ruined it, especially considering they never could have written the originals based on their formulas of generating content by marking checkboxes.

One problem. They aren't future samurai

Now if only the movie had a Main Character, or even Characters that you could describe beyond their job, or a plot sequence that made sense, et cet'ra. But oh boy, what a huge chunk of childhood, alongside The Matrix. :D

Phantom Menace is a great Star Wars movie. It introduced interesting characters like Qui-Gon, Padme, Mace Windu, Darth Maul; it had one of the greatest fight scenes in the entire series; it's plot was a believable introduction into how a society can go from a democracy to a dictatorship through political intrigue and business manipulation.

Honestly rewatching the film the most jarring part of it is is how the movie is edited. Every scene feels like feels like we're walking into it mid conversation like Lucas cut the first 5 minutes of each scene and then each scene cuts just as abruptly like Lucas again cut the ending of each scene. Most jarring is the scene where Maul attacks Qui Gon in the desert. Scene just starts off with them running for no reason and boom, Darth Maul, feels like a scene is missing there.
