In the realm of viral debates and optical illusions, a new Internet phenomenon has emerged, leaving netizens scratching their heads in confusion. It all started with a simple Tumblr post from user "gothicprep," who received an anonymous question asking, "why is your cat green?" Little did they know that their innocent response would spark a heated discussion and captivate the online community.

On August 16, 2021, gothicprep shared a post that read, "She's built different 😏," accompanied by a photo of their beloved feline companion. The image showcases a contented tabby cat, peacefully dozing off on a plush pink blanket. However, what caught the attention of netizens was the caption that followed, "like where is the green."

As the post gained traction, users flooded the comments section with their thoughts and opinions. One user, known as "therealtombergeron," couldn't help but exclaim, "Says cat isn't green, posts a picture of the most green-a** cat I've ever seen." The remark ignited a lively debate, with some users insisting that the cat indeed appeared green, while others argued otherwise.

As the discussion unfolded, user "sweatquiszashak" chimed in, stating, "That's a pretty green cat." Meanwhile, the mention of a previous Internet sensation, "the dress," caught the attention of user "therealbrendanfraser," who remarked, "We may have another 'the dress' situation on our hands." It seems the mysterious color perception of gothicprep's cat had struck a chord, reminiscent of the infamous dress debate that divided the online community years ago.

Curiosity piqued, users delved into the science behind color perception and attempted to unravel the mystery. Some speculated that the lighting conditions and white balance of the photo might have influenced the perception of the cat's color. Others suggested that the cat's environment and the interaction between light and surfaces could create optical illusions.

In the midst of the discussion, user "gothicprep" attempted to clarify, sharing a subsequent post on August 19, 2021. The post expressed their confusion and humorously stated, "Look, I tried to laugh it off, but I haven't stopped thinking about this message because... my cat literally isn't green." The image attached to the post reiterated the cat's true appearance as a typical tabby with brown-grey fur and dark stripes.

While the debate rages on, one thing remains certain – the Internet never fails to surprise us with its ability to transform ordinary occurrences into extraordinary phenomena. From optical illusions to color perception debates, these viral sensations continue to captivate and entertain us.

So, is gothicprep's cat truly green or is it all a matter of perception? The answer may lie in the eye of the beholder, as the Internet once again finds itself enthralled by a seemingly simple question that has sparked a storm of opinions. As the discussion continues to unfold, one can only marvel at the power of social media to ignite curiosity and unite people in the quest for answers.

In the end, whether the cat is green, blue, or any other color, one thing is for sure – gothicprep's furry companion has certainly become the center of attention, basking in the allure of online fame. As the Internet eagerly awaits the next viral sensation, this "green" cat will forever remain a symbol of the unexpected wonders that await us in the digital realm.

color perceived is basically, color of the object+color of the light used to see the object. so you can't just go into paint and eye drop the color of the picture.

Don’t get her angry, you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry.

So, if redshift means something's going away, and blueshift means it's approaching... what does greenshift mean?

Does your cat have a dress?

Shadows are created from direct light bouncing off surfaces into shadow. The surfaces the direct light bounce off of absorb some colors, reflect some colors, and may reflect some full direct light (depending on how shiny the surface is). Tabbies tend to be gray, but that room may just be dumping more blue/yellow (green) light into the shadows due to lack of red-reflective surfaces. The thing the cat's on is mute mauve, which barely reflects red. And the cat is brownish mixing with colors left.

Maybe it's actually a red cat and you are colourblind? Me being exceedingly helpful.

I thought the same when we got our cat, people asked what color it was, I had to think and then answered, "Green." Which sounded demented. Depends on the light of course. But no matter what room it's in, that darn cat is camouflaged and easy to overlook -- until it yowls for more food, and you realize it's right there.

When you point your magic sword at it, does it turn into a giant tiger with armor? Or does it just lick the tip of the sword?

I love the human brain sometimes. Like, yes, it's green, BUT BRAIN KNOWS BETTER so it's also not green, which is as it should be.
