US/Aus dual citizen reporting: My biological mother is Australian. She is easily the most racist person I’ve gone no contact with. As an Australian, she repeats a slur for Aboriginal people whenever she sees a person of color. She refused to come to my wedding because one of my best friends was I. The wedding party as an African American. Me, I sing the Midnight Oil refrain “The time has come. A fact's a fact, It belongs to them Let's give it back”. Racists should be shamed (link in bio).

As an Australian, speaking to other Australians here, I can only say the 'Voice' comes down to exactly the same premise as the 'Gay Marriage' referendum - do you think that all human beings should be treated equally or not? And if you don't, then you have some serious explaining to do...

When the "voice" voting started and there wasn't any clear definition of what "giving a voice" meant, in legal and constitutional terms, I can understand why people were apprehensive. But the government has provided a lot of clarity about exactly what they're proposing and the current recommendation seems completely reasonable; offering an advisory role that can use parliament as a platform but without direct democratic power.
