The Keirin event, a staple in track cycling, continues to baffle and entertain spectators worldwide. The image under discussion perfectly encapsulates the controlled chaos that defines this unique race. Five cyclists, adorned in sleek racing attire and helmets, are seen intensely trailing a motorbike on the steeply banked curves of a velodrome track. The surface is smooth, marked with several concentric lines for positioning and pacing, and the text "6 LAPS TO GO" in the upper left corner indicates the countdown to the final sprint.

One might wonder, why a motorbike in a cycling race? The answer lies in the nature of the Keirin event, where the motorbike, known as a Derny, sets a steady pace before pulling away to let cyclists sprint to the finish. This strategic pacing ensures all riders expend equal effort before the race's c*****, leveling the playing field as they draft behind the Derny. The motorbike gradually increases speed from 15-20mph (24-32kph) to over 30mph (48kph) before exiting with 750 meters to go, leaving cyclists to battle it out in a high-speed final lap that often exceeds 40mph (64kph). Legends like Sir Chris Hoy have been known to reach staggering speeds of 50mph (80kph) during this final sprint.

The image also highlights the competitive atmosphere, with blurred spectators in the background and the iconic Olympic rings painted on the track, signifying the event's significance. Comments from users like "Go around!!!" -motorcyclist in tears, and "That motorcycle trained for years to make the team, don’t take this away from them," add a humorous twist, reflecting the mixed reactions this event often garners.

While some find the Keirin event's pacing strategy perplexing, it is rooted in tradition and designed to test both endurance and sprinting prowess. As one user aptly noted, "Look at how the rest of the pack hang their head in shame because they did think of using a motorcycle." Another user humorously pointed out, "Cyclists need Daily Minimum Exhaust Fumes," highlighting the quirky nature of the event.

The Keirin event, with its blend of strategy and speed, remains a fascinating spectacle in track cycling. Whether viewed as a "ridiculous event" or a thrilling race, it never fails to evoke strong reactions and spirited commentary from fans and spectators alike.

I know nothing about this whatsoever and didn't research, but I assume it's to set a pace before the race starts and, or, to allow the pole position to expend equal effort before the race begins because everyone else gets to draft.  (They do get a rolling start?  I didn't watch this event) Also funny

This is Keirin (?) event. There is really motorcycle in front before they can race.

HLef

It’s a ridiculous event. 5.5 laps behind the motorcycle, 2.5 laps sprint.
