Bill Nye, often referred to as "The Science Guy," has been a prominent figure in popularizing science for decades. However, public opinion about him appears to be sharply divided, as seen in a recent Reddit video titled "Bill Nye is a national treasure."

The video and its surrounding comments reveal a mix of admiration and disdain for Bill Nye. Some users reflect on their positive experiences with him during their youth. One individual recalls, "Growing up in the Seattle area, he used to come to my Junior high and give science demos. He was engaging, and stayed late to answer all of our questions. Didn't talk down to any of us, and genuinely tried to explain things in a way we could understand." This sentiment is echoed by another user who heard Bill speak at SXSW, describing him as "SO funny" and likening his talk to a comedy show.

On the flip side, many users express strong negative opinions. One harsh critique states, "I f***ing hate Bill Nye, the a**hole guy... F*** that misogynist t***." Another comment suggests that Bill Nye's attempt to make science fun actually made one user hate science even more. A common criticism is that Bill Nye is not a "real" scientist, as he holds a degree in engineering rather than a scientific field and has never published research papers. "Bill Nye sucks irl. He has a freaking bachelor's degree and has *never* written/submitted *any* research papers. He’s a fraud who only cares about fame," one user vehemently claims.

Some comments touch on personal interactions with Bill Nye, painting a less-than-flattering picture. One user recounts a bizarre encounter where a visibly intoxicated Bill Nye was doing yoga in jogging shorts at 3 AM, ranting about global financial institutions. Another user shares a negative interaction at a symposium, where Bill Nye allegedly talked down to them and then walked away when challenged on their research.

Despite the backlash, there are still staunch defenders of Bill Nye. Comments such as "Bill Nye is truly an amazing individual! A bastion of thought-provoking and insightful information. We thank you Bill for all you do and have done," show that he continues to have a dedicated fan base. Others reminisce fondly about his television show, with one user stating, "Don’t worry Bill, I remember Saturday mornings like they were yesterday. They were awesome! Keep science fun."

Interestingly, some users question when the tide turned against Bill Nye, with one asking, "When did people start hating on Bill Nye lmao." Another comment humorously shifts focus from Bill Nye to a song in the video, highlighting the varied interests of the audience.

Bill Nye remains a highly polarizing figure. While many appreciate his efforts to make science accessible and entertaining, others criticize his qualifications and personal behavior. This dichotomy of opinions underscores the complex legacy of a man who has spent his career at the intersection of education and entertainment.

Growing up in the Seattle area, he used to come to my Junior high and give science demos. He was engaging, and stayed late to answer all of our questions. Didn't talk down to any of us, and genuinely tried to explain things in a way we could understand. I know a lot of people have had (or claim to have had) bad interactions with him, but he was always cool to us nerdy kids who stuck around to ask questions, and did his very best to make science seem "cool".

I heard Bill speak at SXSW a few years ago. He was SO funny. Knew he was talking to adults and didn’t mind dropping some f bombs. It might as well have been a comedy show.

Met him, he was nice Lol

I met him once at a symposium where I presented. He talked down to me as if I didn’t understand my research and then when I turned it around and asked him questions he clearly had no concept of what I was talking about. He eventually walked away because a professor came up and started agreeing with me. Major d***head.

My friend's dorm hosted him when he was speaking in his college. He came home one morning at 3am to a visibly intoxicated bill nye doing yoga in jogging shorts ranting to him about how the IMF and world bank had irreparably "f***ed the world, every one of us"

Bill Nye is not a scientist. Has a degree in engineering, not any scientific field.
