In a now-viral video on Reddit, a pet owner’s sharp retort to a cashier's small talk has captivated audiences and sparked a conversation about social interactions. The video captures a seemingly mundane exchange at a grocery store that quickly takes a silly turn.

As the pet owner approaches the checkout, the cashier attempts to make small talk, asking, "Hey, you doing good? Getting some food for your dog?" Without missing a beat, the pet owner responds, "What the hell you think I'm getting for him, a zebra?"

This unexpected and humorous reply has resonated with many viewers, prompting a flood of reactions. One user commented, "Southern hospitality at its finest," while another recounted a similar experience: "A checker at the grocery store asked me ‘what brings you in today?’ Umm…hunger?"

The video has also sparked a broader discussion about the nature of small talk in retail settings. Some commenters expressed their frustration, with one noting, "Glad to find out I’m not the only one that hates cashier small talk about what I’m buying. I completely avoid one particular place now because the cashiers always have some dumb thing to say about what I’m buying."

Others shared their own humorous or frustrating encounters. One user humorously remarked, "Don't worry, it works in reverse, too. I fill shelves and was recently asked if the bacon was gold plated. I had to ignore the comment, but inside I was thinking of saying I wish I'd be buying it, stripping it, and making a fortune. But that would get me fired."

The video has even triggered nostalgic memories for some. A commenter reminisced, "When someone was in the 15 items or less line at Walmart and had way more items, my grandfather used to point at the items and start counting them loudly. It used to embarrass me at the time, but now looking back, it's really funny and makes me miss that fella."

Amidst the humor, a few comments touched on the deeper implications of such interactions. One user speculated, "Probably hates the dog and his life, seriously the guy is not happy and definitely not into small talk," while another wished to emulate the pet owner's boldness, stating, "I want to be like him when I get older."

The video has clearly struck a chord, blending humor with a touch of social commentary. Whether it's the silly response, the shared frustrations, or the nostalgic recollections, this viral moment has given viewers plenty to think—and laugh—about.

Don't worry it works in reverse, too. I fill shelves and was recently asked if the bacon was gold plated (as if I was getting a cut of the price gouge) I had to ignore the comment inside I was thinking of saying I wish I'd be buying it stripping it and making a f***ing fortune. But that would get me fired. Also if there's a sign saying we don't have any of xyz products asking me to check the back isn't going to make your brand of milk/eggs/coffee magically appear I'm not David Copperfield. And throwing a tantrum won't change that.
