An image titled "Thanks Merriam-Webster, it took me a minute…" has recently sparked a wave of laughter and confusion among Reddit users. The image, featuring a textual example from Merriam-Webster, reads: "Examples of carnation in a Sentence" followed by the sentence "The groom wore a carnation in his buttonhole." This seemingly innocent example has garnered attention for its unintended humorous implications.

One Reddit user, Buttonhole, humorously clarified, "Not the body part," highlighting the double entendre that many initially misinterpreted. Another user chimed in with, "Do you play connections, or is this just a coincidence lol," questioning if this was a deliberate play on words.

Comments continued to pour in with playful banter. One user joked, "I think having a carnation in my buttonhole would be extremely uncomfortable," while another added, "Same, had to read it twice, too." The humorous nature of the sentence even inspired a witty remark in Slim Pickens' voice, "What in the tarnation?"

Referencing a bit by Jay Leno, a user shared, "Jay Leno used to actually do a bit on the show called 'Headlines' where people would send in funny misprints and ambiguous wording from ads and newspaper articles." This comment drew a parallel between the Merriam-Webster example and Leno's comedy goldmine of humorous misprints.

The conversation took a romantic twist when one user proposed a new pickup line, "Walk up to a woman wearing a jacket with a pretty flower, and say, 'I'd like to put something in your buttonhole.' Very romantic." This playful suggestion added to the light-hearted nature of the discussion.

The image also sparked a wave of nostalgic references, with one user recalling books with similar humorous wordplay, such as 'Squad Helps Dog Bite Victim' and 'Opium Smokers Turn to Dried Dung.' Another user humorously noted, "Now I have buttonhole on the brain…thanks Merriam-Webster."

In a final nod to pop culture, a user imagined Beavis from Beavis and B***-Head in a tuxedo, quipping, "The great buttonholio." The thread encapsulated the essence of internet humor, showcasing how a simple sentence example can unite users in shared amusement and creative commentary.

The Merriam-Webster image has undoubtedly provided a moment of levity for many, proving that even educational content can sometimes lead to the most unexpected and delightful conversations.

“What in carnation is goin’ on in his buttn’hole?”

Jay Leno used to actually do a bit on the show called 'Headlines' where people would send in funny misprints and ambiguous wording from ads and newspaper articles [Conan later did a parody of it called 'Actual Items' where they just obviously photoshopped ads to have ridiculous content]. Anyway, later the show made a book of some of the better ones, with him commenting, and one of the adds was for a sewing machine with a "built-in b*******r". His comment was "I don't know what it is. I don't want to know what it is". Well before that there were a couple books on the same premise, one titled 'Squad Helps Dog Bite Victim.' and the other 'Opium Smokers Turn to Dried Dung.'
