An image featuring a puffin walking on grass with the text "IT'S BETTER TO REGRET NOT HAVING KIDS" at the top and "THAN REGRET HAVING THEM" at the bottom has ignited a passionate discussion online. The puffin, a small seabird known for its colorful beak and distinctive black and white feathers, appears in motion while the background remains slightly blurred, drawing attention to the bird.

This simple yet poignant image has resonated with many, prompting a flood of heartfelt comments. One user reflected on their experience of having children, saying, "I’m having such a hard time with this. I had kids. Pushing 60. They’re late 20’s. They’re doing ok. Not great. Ok. We support them any way we can. Always will. Here’s the 'but'. They’re not really happy. They’re surviving. It breaks our hearts. They are supposed to have it better than we did. It’s really crushing us." This captures the sentiment of parents who hoped for a better future for their children but are faced with the harsh reality of their struggles.

Another user shared a more humorous yet critical perspective: "Don't think of it as having a baby, think of it has having company over for three meals a day for a couple of decades straight and you can't uninvite them even after they p*** on the living room carpet." This comment highlights the long-term commitment and unexpected challenges that come with parenting.

The conversation also touched on the societal pressures to have children. One commenter noted, "I keep being told I should have kids to 'preserve the bloodline'. Like, what would I preserve? Depression and ADHD?" This underscores the importance of considering personal readiness and mental health before deciding to have children.

Many users expressed their decision to remain child-free. "I have opted for a child-free life. I know, in my heart, I'm too selfish for kids. I won't be a good mother. People say 'you don't know that. You could change'. They're right, I could. Don't want to risk that I won't," one user admitted, highlighting the introspection and self-awareness required in making such a significant life choice.

Others shared their observations and experiences with regret and parenting. "My husband won't say it, but he sure acts it. He regrets having kids. I regret having kids with him," wrote one user, illustrating the complex emotions and potential regret that can accompany parenthood.

The image and its accompanying text serve as a catalyst for an important conversation about the pressures and expectations of having children. The diverse range of comments—from those who have children and face daily struggles to those who have chosen a child-free lifestyle—reflects the multifaceted nature of this deeply personal decision.

Ultimately, the puffin meme has sparked a meaningful dialogue about the realities of parenthood and the value of considering one's own happiness and circumstances before making such a life-altering choice.

Variant of Pascal's Wager. If I regret not having kids, I'm salty. If I regret having kids, both of us will suffer. Less suffering this way.

My mother told me in front of a dozen people that she wishes she had an abortion because I didn't clean up quick enough. I was 14. Another time I broke down and told my parents I was depressed and thinking of offing myself; my mom said "you'll get over it, grow up" I keep being told I should have kids to "preserve the bloodline". Like, what would I preserve? Depression and ADHD?

I think way more people have kids who shouldn’t than don’t have kids but should.

I love my nieces and nephews, they’re great kids and fun to hang out with, but if I lived with any of them 24/7 I’d set myself on fire.

I doubt I would make a good parent, and I'm not dumb enough to try and see if I'm wrong.

I’ve never been in a situation where I thought to myself “kids would really make this better “
