In a powerful and relatable tweet, Twitter user "ADHD Jesse" (@adhdjesse) captures the often misunderstood challenges faced by individuals with ADHD. The tweet, posted on September 13, 2022, at 18:30, has resonated deeply with many, sparking a wave of comments from people who share similar experiences.

The tweet reads:

"‘Why don’t you just do the thing?’ — people without ADHD that don’t understand there is literally nothing I want more than to do the thing. I am desperate to do the thing, but my brain simply won’t fire the neurons required to move me into action."

This concise message underscores the frustration and helplessness that can accompany ADHD, particularly when it comes to initiating tasks. Jesse’s words shed light on the internal battle that many with ADHD face daily, which is often invisible to those without the condition.

The tweet features a profile picture of Jesse, a person with short hair and a beard, standing against a blurred outdoor background. Jesse's account is verified, adding credibility to the message.

The reactions to this tweet have been overwhelmingly supportive and empathetic. One user commented, "ADHD doesn't have a problem with thinking... It has a problem with DOING." Another highlighted the issue of executive dysfunction, calling it a significant barrier to task initiation.

Further comments included personal anecdotes and expressions of solidarity. One user shared, "I have literally cried over my inability to engage with, and do, the thing. That's how bad I want to do the thing." Another added, "You mostly just gotta figure out how to start the thing. Once you start the thing the ADHD automation can kick in assuming you're any good at the thing."

The tweet also spurred discussions about the broader implications of ADHD, including the impact on daily life and relationships. A poignant comment read, "Hubs has untreated ADHD at 63. We realized the reason he has stuff scattered wildly everywhere on our two acres is because his brain can't get organized so why would his stuff be organized?"

ADHD Jesse’s tweet has not only provided a voice to those with ADHD but also fostered a community of understanding and support. It highlights the importance of empathy and awareness when interacting with individuals who have ADHD and emphasizes that the struggle to "do the thing" is a genuine and often overwhelming challenge.

This viral moment is a reminder that social media can be a powerful platform for raising awareness and fostering connection among those who share common struggles. Jesse's tweet is a testament to the power of speaking out and the importance of understanding mental health challenges.

I have literally cried over my inability to engage with, and do, the thing. That's how bad I want to do the thing. I KNOW I am only making things harder on myself. I KNOW I will be less stressed if I just do the thing and move on. I KNOW doing the thing won't be that hard and won't be that much effort in the end. I KNOW the thing inside and out. I genuinely WANT to do the thing. And yet, that STILL does not mean I can force myself to actually do the thing.

I feel like a Sim who's actions keep getting clicked off by the player.

I dream of getting a diagnose and taking the focus medicine and Get Things Done! Would be wonderful. But alas, I’m 40, female and “too well functioning” so yeah.

I just burst into tears cuz the THING I've been fighting against is a sink full of dishes THAT I DON'T EVEN NEED TO WASH. I literally just need to load them into the dishwasher and it's been months and I just cannot do it. I've tried every f***ing method, stuff y'all have suggested, stuff my ther***** has suggested, stuff I already know to try. I f***ing hate being ADHD sometimes. I can't get anything done and I'm unlovable.

Hubs has untreated ADHD at 63. We realized the reason he has stuff scattered wildly everywhere on our two acres is because his brain can't get organized so why would his stuff be organized? As someone without it, it makes me crazy but nagging him would serve no purpose so I just try to help keep him organized where I can.

You mostly just gotta figure out how to start the thing. Once you start the thing the ADHD automation can kick in assuming you're any good at the thing.
