The Olympics have always been a captivating event, not just for the athletic prowess displayed but also for the symbolic medals awarded to the champions. A recently shared image online showcases a fascinating comparison of gold medals from three recent Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020, Rio 2016, and London 2012. Each medal's design reflects the unique artistic and cultural influences of its host city.

### The Medals:

1. **Tokyo 2020:**

The Tokyo 2020 gold medal stands out with its detailed engraving of the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, who is depicted standing proudly in front of the Panathenaic Stadium. Rays extend from the background, adding a sense of grandeur. The text around the edge reads "X**II Olympiad Tokyo 2020." On the back, the Olympic rings are prominently displayed above the symbol of the Tokyo Olympics, which includes a laurel wreath, symbolizing victory and honor.

2. **Rio 2016:**

The Rio 2016 medal takes a simpler yet elegant approach. The front side shows Nike holding a palm branch, with stylized figures and rays emanating from behind her. The text "X**I Olympiad Rio 2016" is inscribed above. The back side features the Rio 2016 logo, an abstract shape resembling three individuals holding hands, along with the Olympic rings and wavy lines that symbolize the vibrant Brazilian landscape.

3. **London 2012:**

The London 2012 medal showcases a more classic design with Nike standing in front of a stadium, encapsulated by the text "X** Olympiad London 2012." The back side diverges into a more abstract territory with intersecting lines creating a geometrical pattern. The Olympic rings and the jagged "2012" logo are prominently overlaid, reflecting the modern and dynamic spirit of London.

### User Reactions:

The image has sparked a lively discussion among viewers. Comments range from preferences for specific designs to historical insights. One user noted, "TIL the Olympics 1924 also took place in Paris. Just 100 years apart from Paris Olympics 2024," highlighting a fascinating historical parallel. Another user humorously remarked on the London 2012 design, saying, "London 2012's designs always felt like they were too proud to admit the PSD file got corrupted and just went with it."

Some users expressed their favorite designs, with one saying, "paris 2024 is my favorite, with beijing 2008 a close second, and sydney 2000 getting the bronze. and a special place for paris 1900 for being a rectangle," while another mentioned, "Athens 1896 hits different." The discussion also touched on the absence of winter Olympic medals and the consistency of design elements over the years, with one user pointing out, "Fascinating that Amsterdam 1928 set the design for 40 years to come, with elements used as long as until Sydney 2000."

The gallery of previous Olympic medals not only showcases the evolving artistry of these prestigious awards but also ignites a sense of nostalgia and curiosity among viewers. Each medal tells a story of cultural significance, athletic achievement, and the timeless spirit of the Olympic Games.

So in 2000, they lost the basic outline template and just started freestyling the design?

I still wish the Rio medals said "Rio de Janeiro" instead. All the other medals had the full city name.
