A tweet by user "teddy" (@esarhaddon__) has gone viral, igniting a heated discussion on the immense wealth of some international students and its implications. The tweet, posted on February 2, 2022, reads, "You ever see an international student so wealthy, you immediately know their parents are part of their nation’s troubles?"

The tweet, accompanied by a profile picture of an orange cartoonish fox or wolf head, has amassed significant engagement with 12K reposts, 2.3K quotes, 74K likes, and 1.9K bookmarks. This widespread interaction highlights the resonance of the tweet's message with a broad audience.

Commentary on the tweet has been varied, with one user noting, "Yeahhh... a lot of those students come to the university in my town. You see 18-year-olds with literal supercars tooling around." This sentiment is echoed by another commenter who recalled, "Saw plenty of them year back. Dudes driving a different Ferrari or Lamborghini every week."

Not all reactions were light-hearted. One user recounted a troubling personal experience: "I knew a guy years and years back in college who got in hock to a b***** for over a million, and he just called up his dad, who flew to the US and withdrew the cash and handed it off to the b*****. He slapped his son and went back home. Guy was gambling again before the day was out."

The discussion also touched on cultural and familial expectations. A commenter shared, "Dated one for a while. Her father was a university prof but her mom was an oil magnate from India. She had a really bad anxiety disorder. It ultimately didn't work out; her mom bullied her into getting together with a 'nice Indian boy' and we lost touch 'cause he didn't like her talking to me."

The tweet has also drawn attention to broader economic disparities, with one user linking an article titled "World's Richest 1% Gained $40 Trillion in a Decade: Oxfam" to further underscore the issue of wealth concentration.

Interestingly, some shared humorous anecdotes reflecting the lavish lifestyles of these students. One commenter quipped, "My favorite is 'Laundry? No, I just go buy new clothes every week,'" while another shared a satirical letter exchange: "Dear Dad, My first weeks at University are going well. But I feel a bit embarrassed because I go to class with my Ferrari, but all my mates go by train. Dear Son, Understood. Just tell me what kind of train do you like and I will buy you one."

The conversation also touched on systemic issues within educational institutions. A former student recalled, "A student of mine went to an Ivy League school to get a doctorate in physics. He caught kids cheating, but because they were from Middle Eastern oil money, the whole thing was swept under the carpet so that their rich friends wouldn't get the idea they should stay away from that university."

Teddy's tweet has undeniably struck a chord, prompting a multifaceted discussion about wealth, privilege, and the ethical implications of extreme affluence among international students. As the debate continues, it sheds light on the broader societal and economic issues that underlie these observations.

In uni (20 years ago), one of my friends' roommates was the 3rd born child of a high-ranking Chinese official. It was a private university, not a public university. The kid could not return home (because 1 child policy). But already had a job secured at a very large corporation in the USA, despite being a freshman. It is hard to recall any one thing they did that wasn't cringe.

When I was in college, this guy invited me to take an all expense paid trip to the UAE because I was “cool” and his dad was in the military. So hard to say no but I knew it wasn’t cool at all to go with his father. Also knew someone from Indonesia who was just insanely rich and found out their father was a politician.
