The video game industry is facing a significant shift as actors officially go on strike, demanding AI protections and fair wages. This movement, fueled by persistent grievances, is gaining traction with support from various corners of the industry.

A recent image captures the essence of this strike, featuring a group of eight enthusiastic individuals standing together in a semi-circle. They are outdoors, near a modern building with a bright sign that reads “HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS,” and the atmosphere is lively. Each person is smiling and giving thumbs-up gestures, clearly indicating their solidarity and determination.

The attire of the group is varied, reflecting their unique personalities. On the left, a man with short hair and a beard wears a blue jacket and jeans. Beside him, a woman in a baseball cap sports a black T-shirt with the slogan “SAG AFTRA STRONG” and denim shorts. Another woman with curly hair is dressed in a red dress and a black jacket, also giving a thumbs-up gesture. A man in a suit jacket, black shirt, and jeans stands next to her, mirroring her gesture.

Slightly behind them, a man with dark hair wears a grey hoodie under a black jacket. Next to him, a woman in red pants and a black jacket, holding a sign in support of unions, smiles widely. Another person behind her also holds a sign. The rightmost individual, a woman with short hair, wears a black outfit with a red flower on her jacket and is also smiling and giving a thumbs-up gesture.

The signs they hold are vibrant and impactful. One reads “SUPPORT UNIONS IN VIDEO GAMES,” decorated with illustrations of a controller and joystick. Another sign states “UNIONS ARE NOT DLC!” with colorful icons of video game buttons, cleverly referencing downloadable content in video games.

Comments from the community reflect the widespread support and concerns about the industry's future. One user highlights the plight of Jennifer Hale, renowned for her role in the Mass Effect series, who reportedly earned only $4,000 for her iconic work. Another comment discusses the instability of the industry, noting how entire teams can be laid off despite successful game launches. The recent recognition of the World of Warcraft development team’s union by Microsoft is also mentioned as a significant win.

Supporters of the strike urge donations to the SAG AFTRA foundation's strike relief fund, ensuring union members can sustain themselves during this period. Concerns about AI replacing voice actors are prevalent, with some expressing skepticism about the strike's potential success given the rapid advancements in AI technology.

This movement isn't just about immediate gains but also about securing a sustainable future for video game actors. The collective voices at the rally, coupled with the support from fans and industry insiders, underscore a critical moment in the fight for fair treatment and recognition in the video game industry.

They've been getting the shaft for so long, jennifer hale said a few years ago she only got 4k for the mass effect series, such an iconic actor like that should of been a millionaire... instead her wage was stolen by billionaires.

The entire industry is the most unstable way to make a living. Your studio can make a game that was on time, under budget, and does amazing sales? Everyone who made it can be laid off before in the 12 hours between "gone gold" and hitting Steam because your publisher wants to get another 0.05% this quarter for the shareholders.

The WoW dev team recently got a huge win where their union was officially recognized and Microsoft began negotiations with them https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/microsofts-world-warcraft-development-workers-unionizing-112270752

If you want to help out, you can donate to the SAG AFTRA foundation, they operate a strike relief fund that makes sure the union members can make ends meet while they aren't getting paid by the studios. https://sagaftra.foundation/emergencyfinancialassistance/

AAA Video game studios are famously run by the worst actors in the industry & in general love exploiting their staff & creeping on women

I feel like universal basic income is the only way forward. The technology is absolutely going to go towards AI voice actors, but with universal basic income the creative people can be free to create.

Game studios are putting AI in the wrong place. Stick it in bots and give me bots that learn and play like people
