Profit Over Patient Care: The Annual Medicare Tradition Exposed

A recent video on Imgur, titled "Profit over patient care," has sparked a heated discussion about the ongoing issue of physician reimbursement cuts. The video features a conversation between two characters, one of whom is named Jimothy, discussing a 2.8% cut in physician reimbursement for the next year. This cut marks a continuation of a longstanding Medicare tradition, which has seen physician reimbursements reduced by 29% since 2001.

Jimothy questions the rationale behind these cuts, noting that physicians are the ones directly delivering healthcare to patients. Despite rising inflation and increasing costs, physicians continue to receive less pay each year. The conversation humorously highlights the frustration among physicians, with one nephrologist glaring through a window, and the previous year's disgruntled surgeon adding variety to the discontent.

The video has resonated with many viewers, as evidenced by the comments it has generated. One commenter humorously noted, "Last year it was a surgeon, it's good to have a variety," expressing both laughter and tears at the absurdity of the situation. Another pointed out the seamless looping of the video's second half, adding to its comedic impact.

However, the underlying message is far from funny. One user shared their personal experience with changing providers due to increased rates, only to face long waits and constant rescheduling, highlighting the inefficiencies and frustrations within the healthcare system. A Canadian nurse chimed in, stating, "you guys are in shambles," reflecting an external perspective on the situation.

The video also sparked deeper discussions about the shift from political governance to corporate governance, with one commenter noting, "we’ve moved out of political government and into corporate governance. And under this regime, they’ve abolished capitalism and moved into corporate socialism." This sentiment was echoed by another user whose wife, an SLP, faces pressure to increase efficiency at the expense of quality patient care.

A particularly telling comment came from a server admin at Optum, who admitted, "yes it's bad, no I don't really like it but I have bills to pay," illustrating the difficult choices healthcare workers face.

The video and its ensuing discussions shed light on the broader issues plaguing the healthcare industry, including the influence of lobbyists, the growing number of physicians unwilling to accept Medicare patients, and the financial struggles of hospitals. One user pointed out that each Senator or Congressman has about 12 lobbyists for the healthcare industry alone.

The overarching theme is clear: the current system prioritizes profit over patient care, and this has far-reaching consequences for both healthcare providers and patients. For instance, giant health systems like Ascension in the Midwest are buying up hospitals and siphoning money to other industries, exacerbating the problem.

As one commenter poignantly put it, "Guns are a right and healthcare is a privilege," capturing the irony of the situation. The video serves as a stark reminder of the need for systemic change to ensure that patient care is prioritized over profit in the healthcare industry.

My preferred provider raised rates last year, so I changed to a new one in January. Could not get a doctor I wanted. Could not get an appointment until August. Just got a call that they've changed the doctor and moved the appointment out a couple days. I've been paying premiums for seven months for ABSOLUTELY NO BENEFIT. This system sucks. Sucks money, does nothing.

My wife's an SLP. She's regularly recognized for connecting with patients and using sound, medical-based, modern, therapies. Her boss recently got an email from upper management stating "Gertrude (pseudonym) is an excellent clinician, but if she doesn't increase her efficiency, we're going to explore bringing in other options." Now they're telling her to treat 3+ patients at once in group therapy sessions so they can bill them simultaneously but only pay her for the hour she works with them.

It's FUNNY, 'cause it's TRUE!

Wait. What am I missing? Someone help my ignorance…why would a physician need to be reimbursed? When I think reimbursement, I assume that means getting paid back for personal funds spent on ‘x’? Why would they have the spend their own money?
