In today's fast-paced work environment, deadlines and workload can often feel overwhelming, especially for those managing ADHD. A recent meme featuring the socially awkward penguin perfectly encapsulates this struggle and highlights the positive impact a supportive manager can have.

The meme, set against a two-tone background of blue and red, features an illustration of an Adelie penguin in the center. The text in bold white capital letters with a black outline reads:

Top Text:

"SUPER BEHIND DEADLINE.

THINK MY MANAGER IS MAD AT ME."

Bottom Text:

"SHE ASKS, 'HOW CAN I HELP?' AND BODY-DOUBLES ME OVER ZOOM FOR TWO HOURS"

This humorous and relatable meme illustrates the expectation of a manager being upset when an employee falls behind, only to reveal the manager's supportive nature by offering help through a practice known as body doubling.

Body doubling is a technique where a person with ADHD works alongside another individual to complete tasks that might otherwise be frustrating or challenging. This method can significantly improve focus and productivity. According to Medical News Today, body doubling can be an effective strategy for those with ADHD, allowing them to achieve more with the presence of another person, even if it's over a Zoom call.

Responses to the meme have been overwhelmingly positive, with many sharing their own experiences and praising the supportive nature of good managers. One user commented, "That's awesome. I've learned through a long string of bad managers that the best approach is to proactively reach out maybe 2-3 times a week and say 'Hey, morning, I'm still working on projects A through Q, but we're still prioritizing E,F,G, for end of week, right?' It lets them know that you understand your job, but you're in the weeds, without you having to say that you're in the weeds."

Another user expressed admiration for the manager's approach: "Omg. What a great boss!" Others shared their struggles with unsupportive supervisors and the relief they feel when encountering a manager who truly understands their needs. One user mentioned, "I’m jealous. I am also behind, and I have my one-on-one with my supervisor tomorrow. He sounds annoyed. But I think it’ll be at least 6 months before I get fired… if that’s where it’s going."

The meme also sparked discussions about effective management techniques. One user, an IT manager, sought advice for better supporting their employees with ADHD, highlighting the importance of understanding and adapting to individual needs.

In a world where many employees feel the pressure of high expectations, the socially awkward penguin meme serves as a reminder of the power of empathy and support in the workplace. A simple gesture, such as a manager offering to body double over Zoom, can make a significant difference in an employee's productivity and well-being.

For those managing ADHD or any other challenges at work, finding a supportive manager can be a game-changer. Whether it's through proactive communication, understanding individual needs, or employing techniques like body doubling, the key lies in fostering a positive and supportive work environment.

The meme not only provides a humorous take on workplace dynamics but also sheds light on the importance of compassionate leadership. Managers who take the time to understand and support their employees can create a more productive and positive workplace for everyone.

I do this with my teammate all the time! She's my best friend and I'm technically her manager after a recent "promotion", we body double on Teams and it helps us focus! But we also chat a lot. But we get more work done than if we were trying to white knuckle through it alone. I'm glad you have a manager who understands.

Oh @op, hey so I'm an IT manager having some difficulties communicating with an employee but I've noticed that they accomplish a LOT more when I schedule group sessions with them. I want to get better at helping them succeed. Do you have any advice for a manager looking to help a report with your needs?

I hate body doubling. When people offer it/want it with me unless I know them reeeeeeeeal well my skin crawls. It's weird! I don't know - it distracts me more and makes my energy weird. Like I'm performing, I think? I'm really glad it works for you and even better, your boss was cool about it! The more coping skills you got, the better.

What is body doubling?

I had NO idea this was a thing. In the early 90s, as a junior programmer, I had an older fella who sat with me, asked me what I ( / "we") were doing, engaged w questions, lots of times just fell asleep. We both agreed; I was the vastly superior raw talent, he brought wisdom. Him just being there had 50x improvement for me. I never knew it had a name.. Thank You.
