What Happened to Science Guy? The Mystery Behind the Missing Imgur Posts
Updated Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 12:00 AM CDT
The Imgur community has been abuzz with questions about the sudden disappearance of a beloved user known for their insightful science posts. The user, who operated under the handle "Science Guy," has seemingly vanished, leaving many fans wondering about their fate.
In a recent screenshot of the mobile application's user profile page, several details about the user named "Shmong" have come to light. The profile shows an impressive status of "Glorious - 512,027 Points - 35 Trophies," accompanied by an avatar of a skull on a futuristic purple grid landscape background. The time on the screenshot reads 13:27, and the status bar is filled with various icons, including signal strength, battery, and notifications.
The profile features three menu tabs: "Posts," "Favorites," and "Comments," with the "Posts" tab highlighted. This section contains multiple entries titled "This Week In Science," each summarizing scientific news and discoveries for specific weeks. These posts, displayed in a grid layout with two columns, include images, sources like "sciencealert.com," the number of points, and a trophy icon.
For example, the post from 27 March - 02 April 2023 covers topics such as theoretical limitations on special interest operators, education's effects on brain processing, the purpose of sleep, and a newly discovered African pouch rat, garnering 177 points. Another post from 10 April - 16 April 2023 discusses signature signals in astronauts' brains, hidden corridors in Egypt's Great Pyramid, molecular magic in dogs' sense, artificial womb adoption, new antibiotics derived from ants, and NASA’s asteroid sample retrieval, with 166 points.
Despite these fascinating updates, the absence of new posts from Science Guy has left a void in the community. Comments from users reveal their concern and curiosity:
- "Thanks for noticing. These posts were always great to see amidst the typical nonsense. I mean we are here for the nonsense but also the science. Hope science guy is alright. By the way, did you check other platforms to see if he just gave up on Imgur?"
- "Did a quick search of the science tag to see if maybe they changed their profile. No dice. I did find another user that seems to have picked up the slack in the interim. Their username is @Sheldonian. Slightly different format but provide the same links to articles. Hope that helps your science cravings."
- "Maybe there’s been no science in the last year? Covid has been cured, right?"
- "Strange, I thought I saw one of their posts this spring and I remember thinking that it had been a while. Maybe I saw someone else posting science news."
- "We need Science Guy!!!"
Some users speculated that the platform itself might have contributed to the burnout: "Imgur probably burned them out. It's so depressing on here these days." Others joked about the situation: "He was 'blinded by science' and can no longer see to make the posts."
In the meantime, a user named @onlyporridge has stepped in to fill the gap, posting weekly science summaries to keep the community informed. Another user noted: "Hi, at the beginning of the year I started making weekly science summaries, I just posted the most recent one."
While the exact reason for Science Guy's absence remains unknown, the Imgur community continues to hope for their return, eagerly awaiting the next installment of "This Week In Science." For now, users like @Sheldonian and @onlyporridge are helping to keep the flame of curiosity burning.
