Prof. Kevin J. Kircher Exposes Shocking Bitcoin Power Misuse in Texas

In a recent social media reveal, Prof. Kevin J. Kircher highlighted a startling misuse of power markets involving cryptocurrency mining in Texas. The professor shared insights from an engineering conference, unveiling how a single crypto mine in Texas, utilizing hundreds of megawatts, earns more from ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) demand response programs than from actual crypto mining itself.

Prof. Kircher's tweet read, "I learned at an engineering conference recently that one crypto mine in TX, 100s of MW, makes more money off ERCOT demand response markets than it does off crypto. Repeat: TX ratepayers pay them more to sometimes stop mining than they make by actual mining. Just bananas misuse of power markets."

The embedded tweet from Heatmap News presented additional shocking statistics, stating, "Crypto-mining accounts for 2% of all U.S. electricity usage. (Bitcoin alone consumes the same amount of energy as the entire state of Utah.)" The image accompanying the tweet featured a prominent Bitcoin logo on a window, juxtaposed with a blurred silhouette of a person walking by.

The reactions to Prof. Kircher's revelation were swift and intense. One commenter remarked, "This obsession with profit is just insane. Imagine doing this on a small scale. You tell your kid they need to eat more ice cream so you can get your spouse to buy more from the store just so you yourself can increase the grocery budget." Another added, "Imagine if leaving your car idling 24/7 could produce solved sudokus you could trade for heroin. It’s insanity that we will burn power for literally no real purpose but to prop up a virtual currency."

Many users expressed frustration with the broader implications of cryptocurrency. One user stated, "Cryptocurrency is humanity's dumbest invention. We already have like 180 currencies that we actually use. Why are we buying a virtual currency that we can't even buy anything with? Have we completely lost the plot?" Another pointed out the financial burden on Texas residents, "As a Texan who has been tracking expenses for years now, I can confirm. In the last 5 years, my average bill has gone up over 25%. I live in the same house and have basically the same day to day as I did 5 years ago from an energy usage standpoint."

The conversation also touched on the ethical and environmental concerns surrounding crypto mining and its energy consumption. One user exclaimed, "Crypto and AI are just scams to enrich the already wealthy even further at the cost of our future. The entire gamble is that somehow every scientist is wrong or that the shareholders will be dead or wealthy enough that the water wars won’t affect them. That we as a species aren’t rioting and removing heads is a sign that the groundwork they’ve done in the last 60 years has worked."

The dialogue around this issue underscores the need for a critical examination of how energy resources are allocated and the impact of cryptocurrency on both the economy and the environment. The discussion also reignites the debate on the regulation and oversight of emerging technologies to prevent misuse and ensure equitable access to resources.

“Imagine if leaving your car idling 24/7 could produce solved sudokus you could trade for heroin” is the best description of crypto that will ever be written. It’s insanity that we will burn power for literally no real purpose but to prop up a virtual currency.

I'm sorry but what. Why is it a** backwards paying them to stop mining when ERCOT should be increasing their electricity price during peak. Who did the crypto mining companies pay off.

I've never seen a more poignant example of why UBI is needed.

You mean after they sold ERCOT to the people by claiming their power bills will be lower without all that big government regulation, they actually pay more than the big government regulation? who would of guessed? Oh right I worked for the national grid in one of the small spots in TX where it still is and I already knew that. Even more fun our customers thought we were part of ERCOT. Which we weren't,

Isn't that essentially extortion?
