In a tweet by @0xgaut that has taken the internet by storm, garnering over 43.5 million views and nearly 934,000 likes, the sentiment of nostalgia for older laptop models is palpable. The tweet, posted at 8:28 a.m. on June 11, 2024, features an image with the caption "look what they took from us." This simple yet powerful message, alongside the visual representation of a stack of four laptops, reveals a chronological progression of laptop designs, highlighting the diminishing number of ports over the years.

The topmost laptop in the stack, the newest model, showcases a minimalist approach with only a USB-C port and a headphone jack. The second laptop, slightly older, includes a USB-C, a USB-A, and an HDMI port, providing a bit more versatility. Moving further down, the third laptop boasts multiple USB-A ports, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and a headphone jack. The bottommost laptop, the oldest in the lineup, is a veritable fortress of connectivity, featuring USB-A, Ethernet, HDMI, an SD card slot, a headphone jack, and a dedicated charging port.

The tweet has sparked a flurry of reactions from users who reminisce about the days when laptops came equipped with a plethora of ports. One user humorously comments, "where's the cd player on all of those?" highlighting another piece of technology that has largely vanished from modern designs. Another user expresses frustration with Apple's design choices, stating, "Hear me out: Stop buying s***ty Apple products."

The evolution of laptop ports has not been without its critics. One user laments, "Absolutely brain amputated. While we don't need all of the original ones, eventually it's just to satisfy the greed to sell authentic add-ons, which of course have to be renewed every handful of years as they become incompatible. No thank you." This sentiment is echoed by another commenter who sarcastically remarks, "Needs more parallel ports."

Despite the nostalgia, some users appreciate the advancements in technology. One user points out, "To be fair usbc does have a lot of bandwidth, enough for all of those ports. The reality is that peripherals are going the way of the dodo, and wireless communication is in for most things." Another user highlights the convenience of modern docking solutions, "Does no one else have/use a thunderbolt dock? Single USB’s connection that handles charging, three monitors, etc? And now every laptop uses usb-c charging instead of one special adapter per laptop? I like this a lot more than the 14 lb laptop with every conceivable connector option."

The tweet by @0xgaut serves as a reminder of how technology has evolved, often at the expense of features that were once considered essential. While some users embrace the sleek, minimalist designs of modern laptops, others can't help but long for the days when their devices were equipped with every port under the sun. Regardless of where one stands on the issue, it's clear that this tweet has struck a chord, prompting a broader conversation about the direction of technology and design.

I can plug a single cable into either my desktop or one of two laptops and my speakers, mic, two monitors, and keyboard/mouse all come along. I'm personally pretty okay with where we are on this, and I remember plugging Commodore computers into a television
