Akira was hugely important work in turning anime into an art form taken seriously. It demonstrated a political message in a way not possible with live action.

Just watched part of a documentary about when Miyazaki and studio Ghibli made Spirited Away. One animator had the task to do that scene where Chihiro father eats (like a pig), a 7 seconds scene, took the animator 16 days to draw 50+ sheets to reproduce her father eating animation, dude was still not satisfied but he already reached and over due date. He couldn't get it right during that time, so he also filmed and studied a co-worker eating for that purpose.
