They don't mention what the 'R' is for so I'll help you out. That 'R' is for 'round'. You want a round tyre. I bought one with an 'S' and it was an incredibly bumpy ride

My dad had a chalkboard in his shop and would give us his "chalkboard talks". That's how we learned internal combustion, how a wing creates lift, the difference between amps, volts, and ohms, and on and on. D*** I miss my Dad.

R is radial (as opposed to bias ply). Doesn't come up much any more on cars, but motorcycle tires use the same system and you still see bias ply there.

More specifically, 1st# is tire tread widtg, 2nd number is the width of the side wall (as a % of the 1st#) so in this picture 235mm wide tread, and the side wall is 45% of 235mm, rim size is in inches, and speed rating has a chart to look at, V being safe for 149 mph, also not shown here is a load index number, which usually comes just before the speed rating, and is disconnected from the rim size number

I'm old...so I'll start with that so Indulge me for a moment. We had quite a few classes in middle school high school that were required. Home economics. Shop ( wood ). Shop ( electrical ). Shop ( mechanical ). All of these ( save shop mechanical ) were required. While it was very very basic skill / knowledge learned....it helped.

Cool. So what does a speed rating of V mean? Do different widths or profiles have different uses? Knowledge without context is pretty useless.
