Unfortunately it’s also killing off the blue agave plants, because tequila is made from the heart of it, also it takes 5-10 years of growth to get a mature plant, and it takes 12-15 lb of agave hearts to make a bottle. Climate change and fungal & bacterial infections have reduced the population too.

Fun Fact: When Filipino slaves were brought over to Mexico by the Spanish they also brought things like mango, tamarind, and coconuts which they would distill into a liquor called lambanog. That process was then adapted to distill agave to create mezcal. The Spanish take credit but the earliest stills in Mexico are identical to those in the Philippines.
