I have a severe disdain for capitalism but I would also like to point out that democracy doesn't really work as well as intended either. The majority of people are not smart enough to decide how others live by deciding who goes into office. H*** the majority of people dont understand how the government works or politics in general. ESPECIALLY the ones that *think* they know. Those are some of the worst offenders.

USA schools don’t even teach proper civics anymore. Kids, my graduating class in ‘05 including, don’t get taught about voting, rights and responsibilities of public officials, how a city council works, etc. I was in the AP Gov & Politics class and even there they didn’t have that in the curriculum. Keeping the masses uneducated.

Given how many people think "capitalism" is a synonym for "cronyism" or "plutocracy", it's pretty g***** clear that not many people have ever seen a country with a functioning government.

Capitalism is an economic model and it's success should be evaluated by the wealth inequality between the poorest and wealthiest of the practicing populace. Right now? Capitalism ain't doing so hot.

Capitalism is not a synonym for freedom, but I've yet to hear how Capitalism could be prohibited without putting fairly serious restrictions on people's freedom. Not that many serious people want to ban Capitalism, but you hear that quite a bit on imgur and reddit.

It's because democracy and freedom are taught as antonyms for communism... I always found this odd in school and would be very specific to not fall into that trap on papers and exams.

Capitalism is just a means of generating and accruing wealth. It's amazing how many people, whether they support it or criticise it, don't understand this.

Can you give us a few examples of countries that are free and democratic yet are not capitalistic?

The average person literally has no idea what capitalism is. I've a friend who jokingly refers to her consuming habits (i.e. frivolous purchase binges) as her "capitalist side". Hell, I've seen interviews with even *Obama*, which touched on capitalism/socialism, and he displayed either a fundamental misunderstanding of both, or a willingness to perpetuate misinformation. And I highly doubt that he's unique in this regard among US presidents.

Nothing wrong with capitalism, per se, but when it does unchecked (see USA), then you're in the s***.
