After some brief research, this only works for private student debt, not federal student loans. Just FYI to all.

The place to start is most likely with a student loan attorney. See if you can get a free or cheap consultation.

Was probably a company that bought the debt for pennies and no one kept a paper trail because the inbetween debt sellers went out of business during the great recession. He got lucky.

Why, in the first place, are there student loans and tuition fees. Shouldn't studying be free?

"Anyone" cannot, in fact, do it.

I used to represent banks in student loan debt cases (my first, very s***** job out of law school). This only works if the attorneys on the other side don't want to do the work to map out the debt assignments (debt collection lawyers aren't paid the best and it's very high volume work). It's not so much that they don't have proper chain (occasionally they don't, but usually they do), it's more that the lawyer can't/doesn't know how to explain the assignments to a judge.
