I urge everyone who is ever in debt collection to do this. If your debt gets taken over by a collection company, most times it was bought from the original company in a massive batch with little to no paperwork or chain of custody for individual files. But if you challenge them legally, they have to prove they actually own your individual debt, and in most cases, they either can't or won't bother trying to track down an individual file on you.

I advise people to act on this quickly, because they will change the laws, or the courts will just rewrite them, to make this impossible.

How would one go about kicking off this chain of events?

collection agencies buy debt for as low as seven cents on the dollar. some states do not allow out of state collection agencies to legally collect

I received a letter from a company that bought my private student loan from another company that bought it stating that if I dispute the balance to notify them in writing within 30 days. I did, and haven't heard from them in 20 years. Paid nothing, no lawyer needed.

I got mine wiped last year through Public Service Loan Forgiveness (which I guess counts as “working for it” because it requires working at a nonprofit for 10 years, where salaries are generally meh). Just knowing that the loans are gone and payments won’t pick up again feels pretty d*** good. I wish the same for each of you.

On a related note, my buddy bought his own credit card debt for pennies. I don't know how he did it, but he did.

So if my loans went from Fed Loan Servicing to Nelnet, would that qualify?
