Don't forget that we also stopped putting lead in, well, everything.

No kids = 3 monies

So in about 30 years there's going to be a huge spike in crime in the red states that are banning abortion?

Shaodyn

Now Republicans want to take society back to the unwanted kids days. They're not even conservative anymore. Conservatives want change to happen slowly. Republicans are regressive. They want change to stop completely and go backwards.

And then people who actually knew what they were talking about demonstrated the Freakonomics dudes were full of s***.

I'm sure that abortion access is part of the drop in crime we saw in the 90s but complex issues almost never have a single ultimate cause. That's why I don't like the Freakanomics guys they over simplify issues.

FirstAidPoetry

While I love the idea of this, Freakonimica was just full of at best, dubious statements.

Hereagain

Freakanomics is so full of s***, though. They made a f***ton of correlative statements without ever proving any kind of causal link. So far as I know, no one knows why there was a drop in crime rates.

*sort of. They proposed one theory on the link between abortion & crime (and one I tend to agree with, btw). But it shouldn't be held up as gospel truth or that they "figured out" the sole contributing factor (they'll be the first to tell you crime rates have many contributing factors). Other economists have criticized their research and asked many valid (and invalid) questions about the idea's gaps & shortcomings. Again, I like their idea, but it's one data point and not "figured out" and done.

Malinut

Whilst I support a woman's b***** autonomy and right to abortion, it is wrong to promote abortion to reduce crime. Promoting better social care, mental health care, schooling and more accessible general healthcare which includes abortion (and other family planning practices) is more valuable.
