it s**** how as a kid you never notice how f***** things are because it's 'normal', realisation only comes later as an adult :'(

"At least she never beat him when drunk." - @OP is not using "us" - you know there's an implication here.

Your brother was lucky to have you there.

alcoholism... more normal than society is prepared to acknowledge.

That’s just a sad thing, be good to yourself OP

For years, I had been upset that my parents pretty much ignored me. Physical needs were provided in good quantity, but d*** little of anything else. When I see posts like this, I feel like my childhood was downright utopian compared to those of children of alcoholic parents. This kind of stuff is heartbreaking. People should take better care of their kids. Congrats on pulling the weight, @OP. You are a good person.

You were, and are, a good older sibling

'Children caring for children' is one of our big flags for neglect: kids shouldn't be solely responsible for the nutrition/hygiene/education or shelter of their siblings. It seems obvious but. Well. I promise it's a sore spot with a lot of people.

You seem to have survived and grown into a genuinely decent person, credit to you.

My parents weren't very self aware, and with each child became less involved/caring. The older siblings are just now finding out how the younger ones were treated and told they were not wanted. Family dynamic can be so bizarre.
