Migrants Struggle as Biden's Asylum Halt Takes Effect

In recent developments at the U.S.-Mexico border, Ana Ruiz, a 35-year-old Mexican migrant, expressed her dismay at the disparity in treatment between migrants from different countries. While migrants from other nations are being released in the U.S., Mexicans are facing deportation. The San Juan Bosco migrant shelter, where Ruiz is located, is receiving about 100 deportees daily.

President Joe Biden issued an executive order suspending asylum processing at the U.S.-Mexico border when arrests for illegal crossings**** 2,500 a day. This asylum halt, which took effect on June 5, has resulted in a 40% decline in arrests for illegal crossings. However, the halt applies to all nationalities but impacts Mexicans and others that Mexico agrees to take, including Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, the hardest.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that the U.S. is collaborating with other countries to accept more of their deported citizens. Despite a decrease from 85% in 2011, Mexicans still accounted for 38% of border arrests in May, the highest of any nationality. The Tucson sector has been the busiest corridor for illegal crossings for much of the past year, with nearly three of every four arrests in the sector last month being Mexicans. Many Mexicans cross illegally near Nogales, Arizona, some using ladders made from materials at a seatbelt plant on the Mexican side.

Most migrants are taken to a cluster of giant white tents near Tucson International Airport, which opened in April 2021 for unaccompanied children. The facility now accommodates 1,000 people, including single adults and families, who sleep on foam mattresses or raised beds. On Tuesday, about a dozen individuals fearing deportation received instructions on the screening interview, which includes a four-hour window to contact attorneys or others for preparation. The Tucson processing center did not conduct screenings before Biden's asylum halt, leading to more migrants being released with orders to appear in U.S. immigration court. The current screenings by asylum officers at the Tucson center take about 90 minutes by phone.

Many migrants who fail interviews are deported to Nogales, a city in the Mexican state of Sonora, and end up at the San Juan Bosco shelter. Francisco Loureiro, who runs the shelter, stated that more Mexicans will try to avoid capture due to the fear of deportation. Ruiz mentioned that she did not get a chance to explain her fear of returning to Mexico due to cartel violence during her asylum interview. Anahi Sandoval, 30, fled Chiapas after her husband was killed for refusing gang extortion and was abandoned by her smuggler in the desert. Araceli Martinez, 32, fears returning to an abusive husband with her 14-year-old daughter but was not asked about her fears during processing and only realized the need to express them after being deported.

In the political arena, the CNN Presidential Debate between President Biden and former President Trump is set to take place at CNN's studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Matt Gorman, a longtime Republican strategist, noted that the debate is crucial as it sets the tone and narrative heading into the summer's conventions. The debate will be simulcast on the trending News Channel and other networks, kicking off at 9 PM ET and lasting 90 minutes with two commercial breaks. Only Biden and Trump will be on stage as third-party and independent candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., did not meet the qualifying thresholds.

To qualify, candidates needed at least 15% in four approved national surveys and to be on the ballot in enough states to reach 270 electoral votes. Trump and Biden bypassed the Commission on Presidential Debates and mutually agreed on the debate rules and conditions, which include no studio audience, muted microphones except when answering questions, no props or notes, and no opening statements. There will be closing statements, with Trump getting the final word, determined by a coin flip.

Polls indicate a very tight race between Biden and Trump, with Trump holding a slight edge in many national polls and key battleground states. Biden has struggled with underwater job approval ratings due to persistent inflation and a crisis at the southern border. Trump, on the other hand, was convicted of 34 felony counts in the first criminal trial ever of a former or current president and faces criminal charges for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, to upend congressional certification of Biden's victory. Trump has promised second-term retribution against political enemies, causing backlash.

The Supreme Court's decision to strike down Roe v. Wade two years ago has further complicated the abortion issue for Republicans. Trump had a notably poor performance in the first 2020 debate, failing to condemn white supremacists and frequently interrupting. However, he improved significantly in the second 2020 debate with a more disciplined and measured approach. Brett O'Donnell, a longtime Republican consultant and debate coach, advised Trump to replicate his second 2020 debate performance. O'Donnell has coached several presidential candidates, including George W. Bush, John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Ron DeSantis.

Conservative Bias:

The chaos at the border is yet another glaring example of the disastrous policies of the Biden administration. Biden's executive order halting asylum processing is a blatant attempt to cover up his administration's failure to secure our borders. The liberal agenda has always been about open borders and letting anyone and everyone into our country, regardless of the consequences. Now, Biden is trying to play tough, but it's too little, too late. The Democrats' reckless policies have created a humanitarian crisis, with migrants suffering and our border agents overwhelmed. Meanwhile, Biden's approval ratings are sinking because Americans are fed up with the liberal incompetence that's putting our nation's security at risk. And let's not forget the upcoming debate, where Biden will undoubtedly struggle to defend his record against Trump, who, despite the witch hunts and baseless charges against him, remains the only leader capable of restoring order and security to our great nation. The liberal media will try to spin this, but the American people see through the lies and deception. It's time to put America first and reject the failed policies of the left.

Liberal Bias:

The situation at the border is a direct result of the heartless and inhumane policies pushed by the Republicans and their enablers. Biden's executive order is an attempt to clean up the mess left by the previous administration's draconian immigration policies, which have caused unimaginable suffering for migrants seeking a better life. The Republicans have always used fear and xenophobia to manipulate voters, and now they're trying to blame Biden for a crisis they created. The upcoming debate will be a crucial moment for Biden to expose the lies and corruption of Trump, who is a convicted felon and a threat to democracy. Trump's supporters, driven by his dangerous rhetoric, attacked the Capitol and tried to overturn a fair election. Yet, the GOP continues to support him, showing their complete disregard for the rule of law and human decency. The Supreme Court's decision to strike down Roe v. Wade has further highlighted the Republicans' war on women's rights. The American people deserve better than the chaos and cruelty of the Republican agenda. It's time to stand up for justice, compassion, and true democratic values.
