President Joe Biden signed an executive order that generally bars migrants who illegally cross the southern border from claiming asylum. Under this policy, authorities can quickly deport or send migrants back to Mexico if the daily number of crossings exceeds 2,500.

Exceptions to the asylum ban include unaccompanied minors, individuals facing serious medical or safety threats, and victims of trafficking. Mayorkas emphasized the administration's commitment to the legality and humanitarian values of the policy, stating, "We stand by the legality of what we have done. We stand by the value proposition."
