Justin Gaethje's Crazy First Sparring Session: A Glimpse into His Early MMA Days
Updated Sunday, July 7, 2024 at 12:00 AM CDT
UFC legend Justin Gaethje recently joined Joe Rogan on his popular podcast, along with his coach Trevor Wittman, to reminisce about their first meeting and Gaethje's initial foray into sparring. The interview offers a lighthearted yet insightful look into the early challenges faced by one of the most dynamic fighters in mixed martial arts (MMA) today.
Justin Gaethje's journey into the world of MMA began in a rather unconventional manner. During the podcast, Gaethje and Wittman share an amusing anecdote about Gaethje's first sparring session. At the time, Gaethje had already fought five amateur MMA fights without any formal striking training, earning his nickname "The Highlight" purely from his grappling prowess.
In a memorable encounter, Gaethje met Trevor Wittman at one of his fights. Wittman was impressed by Gaethje's performance and invited him to train at his gym. Gaethje, eager to improve his skills, accepted the offer. However, his lack of experience with striking became immediately apparent.
Upon arriving at the gym, Gaethje was ready to spar but was clueless about the necessary gear. Wittman humorously recounts how Gaethje didn't even know what equipment he needed. When told to wear headgear, Gaethje was surprised, questioning why he had to wear a "helmet" when no one else did.
The sparring session that followed was nothing short of comical. Gaethje was paired with a fighter named Vinnie Lopez. During the exchange, Gaethje threw an overhand punch while Lopez delivered an uppercut. Both fighters landed significant blows, leading Gaethje to turn around, visibly stunned but excited. Wittman recalls approaching Gaethje, concerned for his well-being, only for Gaethje to exclaim, "That felt so good!" as he admired his fist.
This story not only highlights Gaethje's raw talent and enthusiasm but also underscores the importance of proper training and coaching in MMA. Gaethje's journey from a novice striker to a UFC superstar is a testament to his dedication and the guidance of his coach, Trevor Wittman.
