In an unexpected twist, an amusing image from an online shopping app has surfaced, highlighting the quirks of Wal-Mart's substitution algorithm. The image shows a box of Tampax Pearl Tampons listed under the "Unavailable" section, and hilariously, the "Substitution" section features a container of whole white mushrooms. This humorous mismatch has sparked a wave of laughter and incredulity among Reddit users.

The original post, titled "That's not how it works, Wal-Mart. That's not how any of it works!" quickly gathered attention and a plethora of comments. One user recounted a similar experience during the early days of the pandemic when Costco's system substituted their entire grocery order with goat cubes, leading to an ongoing family joke.

The comments section was alive with witty remarks and laughable takes on the bizarre substitution:

- "Not tonite, honey. I’m on the mushroom."

- "🎶 Tampax..Tampax..Tampax..Tampax..Tampax...MUSHROOM, MUSHROOM.. 🎶"

- "Algorithm be like: It's the same price it must be interchangeable!"

One user humorously noted, "For those wondering, this is just cropped to make it look like the mushrooms are subbing for the Tampax. The way the app works, the first section is all of the items that are unavailable and don't have a substitution. Those just get cancelled and refunded. Everything under 'Substitution' are items that were unavailable but had a sub. The Tampax have been cancelled, and the mushrooms are substituting for something else (probably a different size or type of mushroom)."

The humorous yet relatable nature of these algorithmic mishaps has led to a cascade of jokes and scenarios where users imagined the absurdity of the substitution in real life. From suggestions of using mushrooms as a "menstrual cup" to jesting about fungal infections, the comments were nothing short of creative.

User reactions ranged from disbelief to outright amusement:

- "Not looking forward to that fungus."

- "A.I. is the future"

- "Button mushrooms are generally for a lighter flow."

This image perfectly encapsulates the growing pains of automated systems and their sometimes comical errors. As technology continues to evolve, these light-hearted moments remind us of the importance of human oversight in ensuring practical and sensible substitutions. Until then, these algorithmic blunders will continue to provide endless entertainment and a good laugh for all.

about a month into the Pandemic, when everything was essentially shut down and we were trying to place online orders, we put in a big curbside pickup for Costco. A lot of the stores around us were severely limiting food order and the shelves were still pretty empty. Costco's algorithm managed to accept about a third of our order correctly and then tried to substitute literally EVERYTHING ELSE with "Goat Cubes" from the frozen section. I guess they still had plenty of those. We don't have any milk, would you like to substitute goat cubes? No, we don't have chicken. How about goat cubes? There's no butter. Would goat cubes do? When it's food, it at least is still food being substituted. But then when it tried to substitute things like paper plates and laundry detergent is where I really drew the line. Now we still have a running joke that when a store doesn't have what we're looking for, we'll just say, "oh it's ok. Replace it with some goat cubes!"

They want you to shove mushrooms where? It doesn’t even say what absorbency is.

Have you tried it though? If you remove the stem it could work like a menstrual cup. Right?
