Amusing Glitch: Amazon Prime's Closed Captioning Goes Rogue with 'I Hate You'
Updated Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 12:00 AM CDT
In a recent viral video titled "Apparently my closed captioning hates me" on Reddit, users have shared their amusing yet bizarre experiences with Amazon Prime's closed captioning (CC) system. The video has sparked a flurry of comments, shedding light on a peculiar glitch where the CC displays the phrase "I hate you" during episodes of "The Boys."
A user named Smart TV described how this glitch occurred on their television, particularly during the last few episodes of "The Boys." They mentioned, "I do not use CC and this happened to me on the last few episodes of 'The Boys'. It said 'I hate you' until I stopped and restarted the show. And yes, I thought my TV was subliminally trying to tell me something!"
This glitch seems to be widespread among Amazon Prime users. Another commenter noted, "Amazon's CC have become unbearable," highlighting the frustrations experienced with the service. The issue has been so prevalent that multiple users have reported the same problem, with one stating, "It's been happening on Prime a lot lately. I had the same damn phrase did that to me. That and the loading ring of death."
The glitch isn't limited to just one program. Users have observed similar issues across different shows, with one user commenting, "Prime does stuff like this to me all the time. It especially gets confused when Kimiko has subtitles. Sometimes not even showing them if I have them off for the rest of the episode."
Interestingly, the glitch seems to occur at specific moments in the episodes. One user shared, "I'm literally at the part where Sage is 'late' to the meeting and I also have 'I hate you' on my screen. Subtitles don't time out it appears. It's more odd I was at that part in the episode when this came up in my feed."
While some viewers have taken the glitch in stride, even finding humor in it, others are concerned about the potential for more unsettling experiences. One commenter mused, "Imagine if you watched a horror movie and a glitch like this happened and it said 'you will die' or something."
Despite the inconvenience, users have found temporary solutions to this issue. Turning off closed captioning and then turning it back on seems to fix the problem, at least on a browser. As one user pointed out, "Definitely a bug. Had the exact same thing happen, turning off CC and turning them back on fixed it on a browser."
It appears that even Apple TV users aren't immune to this glitch, with a user mentioning, "My Apple TV has been doing the same thing."
Whether it's a bug in the system or a CC programmer having a bad day, the glitch has certainly provided a mix of frustration and amusement for Amazon Prime users. For now, viewers may need to keep an eye on their closed captioning settings or be prepared for unexpected messages during their favorite shows.
