A recent photograph capturing the terrifying reality of seals with rabies has sent shockwaves through the surfing community in South Africa. The image, which features two seals in a confrontational posture with their mouths open and teeth displayed, has sparked significant concern. The background, a blurry sandy or rocky texture, indicates a coastal environment, underscoring the proximity of this danger to popular surf spots.

The accompanying headline, “Everyone was paddling to get away: seals with rabies alarm South Africa’s surfers,” highlights the gravity of the situation. Nick Dall, writing from Cape Town, reports that this is the first major outbreak of rabies among marine mammals. Seals have been exhibiting aggressive behavior, including biting people, which has led to a state of alarm among surfers and beachgoers.

Rabies, a disease typically associated with hydrophobia, or fear of water, has now made a rare and frightening appearance in marine mammals. This development has drawn a range of reactions from the public. One commenter expressed disbelief, saying, "Rabies is so messed up. Whichever demon designed that thing, good job." Another noted the unusual nature of the outbreak, remarking, "A seal with rabies is very weird as rabies is known as hydrophobia."

The situation has even sparked discussions about potential cinematic adaptations, with one user humorously suggesting, "I think 'Seals with Rabies' could outperform 'Cocaine Bear'." However, not everyone finds the situation amusing. Comments like "This isn't funny" and "Animals suffering to death from an incurable disease…whimsical. Prime entertainment. What is wrong with yall" reflect a more serious and concerned perspective.

The outbreak has also led to debates about the origins of the disease among these seals. Speculations include theories about an unvaccinated dog possibly biting a seal. As one commenter noted, "Wait until a rabid seal bites a whale. Also, I have a bad feeling that the disease came from an unvaccinated dog biting a seal."

The image and the story have drawn significant attention online, with many pointing out the critical difference between seals and sea lions. As one user clarified, "The photo is of Sea Lions as they have external ears; true seals have holes without any external ears."

For those interested in further details, the original article by Nick Dall can be accessed through The Guardian's website, outlining the broader implications of this outbreak on the state of our oceans.

The alarming spread of rabies among seals in South Africa poses a new kind of threat to surfers and marine life enthusiasts. This unprecedented event serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife diseases and their potential impact on human activities.

Rabies is so f***ed up. Whichever demon designed that thing, good job. Ok lets see, this disease kills you in an agonizing way, makes you unable to drink water, transmissible by bite AND makes the animal that spreads it frenzied so that it wants to attack every thing it sees. All that is missing really is that you also turn undead and boom, zombies.

C***, wait until a rabid seal bites a whale. Also, I have a bad feeling that the disease came from an unvaccinated dog biting a seal.
