In a recent viral tweet, April Daniels (@1aprildaniels) has ignited a spirited discussion about the motivations of billionaires investing in space travel. The tweet, accompanied by a profile picture of Daniels with medium-length brown hair and glasses against a grey background, reads: "The billionaires investing in space travel don't want Star Trek. They want Dune."

Daniels' tweet has resonated with many, prompting a wide range of reactions and comments. One user pointed out that "one of the recurring parts of Dune is that every major player in the universe has holdings of CHOAM - essentially a galactic mercantile monopoly." This observation underscores the parallels between the fictional universe of Dune and the real-world ambitions of modern billionaires.

Another commenter added, "Yup. There’s no such thing as a good Billionaire," reflecting a sentiment of skepticism towards the ultra-wealthy. The conversation also delved into comparisons between Dune and other popular science fiction franchises. One user contrasted Dune with Star Wars, stating, "Dune is in large parts about power dynamics, inequality, and a rather materialist worldview. It's brute and too honest. In Star Wars, those things happen, but more because they are internalized by the author. Star Wars is a fun romp."

The tweet also sparked a philosophical discussion, with one user citing a Public Service Announcement from Dune: "The power to destroy a thing is the absolute control over it." This comment highlights the darker themes of control and power that permeate the Dune series.

While some users expressed a preference for other sci-fi universes like "The Expanse" and "Starship Troopers," others speculated on the dystopian future the elite might envision. "Pfff we'd be lucky to get Dune, we'll probably get Warhammer 40k," one commenter lamented, drawing comparisons to various speculative futures.

Elon Musk, a frequent subject of discussion in the context of space travel, was also mentioned. One user mused, "To want Dune, you'd have to be a media illiterate like Elon Musk, who thinks the philosophy of the Culture cycle is remotely compatible with his... oh... i see..." Another comment speculated about Musk's ambitions: "Bet money that if elon makes it to mars first, he will plant a Z flag on it, not American."

The tweet by April Daniels has clearly struck a chord, prompting a rich dialogue about the intentions behind space travel investments and the potential futures they might create. Whether billionaires truly aspire to a Dune-like universe remains a topic of debate, but one thing is certain: Daniels' observation has sparked a conversation that spans the realms of fiction and reality.

I think they want Star Wars, not Dune. Dune is in large parts about power dynamics, inequality and a rather materialist worldview. It's brute and too honest.
