A recent video on Imgur titled "Civil War Causes" has sparked a lively debate about the true reasons behind the American Civil War. The video addresses the contentious issue with a passionate argument that dismisses other suggested causes such as "states' rights" and taxes, pointing instead to slavery as the root cause.

The speaker in the video emphatically states, "It literally does not matter why the North was fighting the war. They didn't start the war... They didn't attack the South first; that was all done by the South." This argument is bolstered by historical evidence that the Confederate states seceded and initiated the conflict to preserve and expand slavery, not merely to defend states' rights.

One commenter shared their educational experience, recalling how history lessons often framed the war as a fight for states' rights while avoiding the topic of slavery. Another user highlighted, "There are literal opinion pieces, in the newspapers of the time, written by the leaders of the Confederacy replying to people trying to say it was about 'states' rights' or whatever saying 'Nope. It was about slavery'."

The video and subsequent discussion point to significant historical documents such as the Confederate Constitution and individual states' articles of secession, which explicitly cite slavery as the primary cause of secession. A commenter noted, "Just read the Confederate Constitution. They tell you what was important to them."

The video also mentions that individual soldiers, including those who may have fought for the Confederacy, had no impact on the war's causes. It was the politicians who decided to secede and fight to preserve slavery. This point resonates with many commenters, one of whom remarked, "The private individual soldier has no impact on why the war is being fought, only the politicians."

Several users recommended additional resources to debunk myths surrounding the Civil War. One notable mention was Atun-Shei, known for creating videos that dismantle the Lost Cause narrative and Confederate apologist arguments. Another user pointed out, "Even Prager University, a controversial organization, admits the Civil War was fought over slavery."

The passionate discourse in the video reminds viewers that the Civil War was unequivocally about slavery. As one commenter succinctly put it, "Every secession doc cites slavery as the cause... The traitor states wrote declarations of why they were seceding. They all say slavery, and they all put it right at the front."

The debate over the Civil War's causes reflects broader discussions about how history is taught and understood. Despite attempts to reframe the narrative, the overwhelming consensus among historians and historical documents points to slavery as the central issue. The video serves as a powerful reminder of why understanding the true causes of the Civil War is crucial for an honest reflection on American history.

There are literal opinion pieces, in the newspapers of the time, written by the leaders of the confederacy replying to people trying to say it was about "states rights" or whatever saying "Nope. It was about slavery". The north wasn't necessarily fighting to end slavery, but to maintain the union. The south however was 100% fighting to keep, expand, and cement eternally the practice of chattel slavery.

meanwhile. I remember history lessons trying to reframe it as 'states rights' but also working hard to avoid in any way shape or form tying those state rights to slavery, they went so far as to exclude the articles of succession and the reasons some states joined the confederates. Didn't learn about those until highschool when I was doing some wikibinges to fill the obvious gaps from classes.

Even Prager University, a N***-front organization, says the Civil War was fought over slavery... no serious person suggests (unless they are that 'Lost Cause Apologist' b******, Ken Burns) that the war was fought over anything but slavery. Every secession doc cites slavery as the cause... your great great grandpappy that fought for the South was a racist p************ and a terrorist... and if he swore an oath to the US Army and then fought for the CSA, he was a traitor too.

Just read the confederate constitution. They tell you what was important to them.

I mean the entire discussion opens and ends with the various declarations of secession that say, yup this is about slavery, white supremacy and black subservience.

All you have to do is read the confederate states articles of secession and the confederate constitution. Slavery is the predominant subject in each of these documents.

He seems upset.

SOinsanity365

The vice president of the confederacy gave a speech specifically why they were seceding, and it it he spells out every reason, and ya know what? YUP! It was f***ing slavery.
