In a poignant social media post, user @revsarahlocke shared a heart-wrenching conversation with her 1st grader that has resonated deeply with thousands. The post reads, "Last night our 1st grader said, 'but what if someone else gets hurt because I took the best hiding spot?' when we were discussing his priority to stay safe." This stark reflection on the innocence lost amid growing concerns for school safety has garnered 3.9K likes, 166 comments, and 187 shares, highlighting a widespread anxiety among parents and educators.

The thread continues with a reply from user @preskoldropout, who recounts an equally distressing anecdote. "I bought my 1st grader the light-up Sketchers she wanted for school. She came home last week and told me she needed new shoes. I told her, 'Those ARE new.' She said, 'Yeah, I know but today we had a code black drill (active shooter drill) and I had to hide and my shoes lit up so, I think I should get new shoes because I don't want us to be found.' I didn't even THINK of this when I purchased them. They were just fun shoes for my SIX YEAR OLD. How is this our reality?" This reply alone has sparked numerous reactions, underscoring the troubling normalization of such drills in young children's lives.

The comments section of the post provides a broader context of societal and political concerns. One user lamented, "I'm sorry that these kids have to suffer like that but you have to understand that convincing middle-aged men that ownership of assault rifles makes them powerful is cheaper than arranging payrolls and hours worked in such a way they have the time and resources to learn social skills." Another user expressed sorrow for the current generation, "Of all the generations and their issues I feel the most for these younger ones that only know this reality. We have to do better."

Some commenters pointed fingers at political affiliations, with remarks such as "Short answer? Republicans," and "Please remember which party continues to stall gun legislation when you vote this November." A particularly striking comment read, "USA a weakest country who can't protect their young but boasts to have the strongest military."

The conversation also touched on broader issues of public versus private schooling, with one user stating, "They want public school to end. They want schools private so they can 1) make money and 2) completely control curriculum." The discourse reflects a deep frustration with current policies and a longing for substantial change.

The image of the screenshot posted by @revsarahlocke and replied to by @preskoldropout powerfully encapsulates the fears and heartbreak of many parents today. It is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address school safety and the psychological impact of active shooter drills on young children. The emotional responses it has elicited are a testament to the shared concern for the well-being of the youngest members of society.

This discussion is a crucial call to action for everyone to think critically about these issues, especially when casting votes, to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all children.

But at least they didn't have to undergo the horrific trauma of being read a beloved children's book by a drag queen.

Are active shooter drills worth it? Do they save lives? How much damage do they do to the children? I don't know the answers but I would imagine the drills themselves do a lot of psychological harm.
