A fascinating and somewhat humorous Twitter exchange has caught the attention of the online community, featuring none other than astronaut Jessica Meir. The image, a screenshot of several tweets, showcases a discussion about the boiling point of water in space, highlighting the pitfalls of "mansplaining" to an expert.

Jessica Meir, an accomplished astronaut, shared an intriguing tweet: "My first venture >63,000', the space equivalent zone, where water spontaneously boils! Luckily I'm suited!" Accompanied by a captivating photo of Meir in a yellow space suit with a helmet, standing in a high-tech facility, her tweet set the stage for the ensuing debate.

The first reply to Meir's tweet came from a user who questioned her terminology: "@Astro_Jessica Wouldn't say it's spontaneous. The pressure in the room got below the vapor pressure of the water at room temp. Simple thermo." This comment sparked a strong reaction from other Twitter users.

User @ithelpstodream humorously pointed out the irony: "Some guy just mansplained space to an actual f***ing astronaut." This sentiment was echoed by many who found the situation both amusing and indicative of a broader issue.

Adding to the conversation, @tedbroiler commented: "tfw correcting misinformation is written off as mansplaining." However, this perspective was quickly countered by @darwinquark, who offered a detailed scientific explanation: "tfw when idiots on tumblr who know jack s*** about thermo assume the dude is ‘correcting misinformation’ when actually he’s dead a** wrong. ‘Spontaneous’ is a scientific term - it means a reaction with negative Gibb’s free energy, i.e. a reaction that will occur without an external energy input, i.e. water boiling because of low atmospheric pressure. Spontaneous is absolutely the correct term for what she’s observing, and that is ‘simple thermo’, and this is ‘correcting misinformation’. Have a nice day."

The interaction highlights the complexities of scientific terminology and the importance of expertise. It also serves as a reminder that even well-intentioned corrections can sometimes miss the mark, especially when directed at someone with specialized knowledge. Jessica Meir's experience underscores the value of respecting expertise and the sometimes humorous consequences of failing to do so.

This exchange has resonated with many, drawing attention to the broader phenomenon where individuals overestimate their understanding of complex subjects—a classic example of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. It also emphasizes the need for respectful and informed discourse, particularly in scientific discussions.

That was such an intense burn the dude spontaneously boiled

THAT'S! WHAT! SPONTANEOUS! MEANS!

With the internet, a lot of people have been able to learn a little bit about a lot of things, and that's f***ing awesome. Unfortunately, the internet also means that people who fail to see that expertise runs far, far deeper than this can embarrass themselves pretty easily.

TIL the scientific definition of spontaneous doesn't mean without reason it means without external influence. Cool.

I've had my BIL mansplain to my sister and I about what mansplaining is and why we should be mad. Then he started realizing he was doing it and I could tell he was having an internal "AHHHH!" moment as he excused himself from the room. My sister and I just kind of watched and drank our wine because of course we knew what it was and experienced it before, but knew he meant well.

Also, contrary to the internet status quo, correcting misinformed strangers does not actually require people to be insultingly condescending a******s to them.

The astronaut just be looking in the comments like “Every damn time I post something.”

Hope he has some water for that burn, unless it spontaneously started boiling.

Antab***ink

She smacked him upside the head with SCIENCE
