The mysterious rituals of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) have long intrigued both members and outsiders alike. The video titled "And they wield great political power in this country" delves into the fascinating and somewhat controversial practices that some Mormons believe will ordain them as kings or queens in the afterlife.

The journey begins in an LDS temple, where participants undergo a ritualistic washing and anointing, followed by receiving a new name and special garments often referred to as "magic underwear." These garments are to be worn day and night for the rest of one's life. Clad in white clothing, covering everything but their head and hands, participants then enter a segregated white room, ready to commence the ceremony.

The ritual involves various stages, including dressing to represent Adam and Eve, learning divine laws, and donning the robes of the holy priesthood. One of the most intriguing aspects is the learning of secret handshakes, key words, and signs. These are believed to be essential for passing the angels who stand as sentinels and to re-enter the presence of the Father. The ceremony also includes participating in the true order of prayer, which involves chanting, "Oh God, hear the words of my mouth," three times in a circle.

The video has sparked a myriad of reactions. Alyssa Grenfell, an ex-Mormon YouTuber, has often discussed such rituals while educating her followers about the history and inner workings of the Mormon church. One commenter shared a personal story about a friend who left the church due to concerns over unsupervised meetings between elders and young children. Another found the secret handshakes akin to gaining entry into an exclusive VIP section guarded by "bouncer angels."

Discussions on the topic have evoked a range of opinions. Some find the LDS rituals bizarre compared to other religions, while others argue that every religion has its unique practices. A former Roman Catholic expressed astonishment at the elaborate nature of these ceremonies, while others likened watching these rituals to observing children at play.

One particularly poignant comment came from a participant at Burning Man, where former Mormons displayed these garments and even posed in front of a replica of the Mormon temple. This highlighted how deeply ingrained and yet divisive these practices can be.

In summary, the rituals of the Mormon church are both elaborate and steeped in tradition. From secret handshakes to magic underwear, these ceremonies continue to captivate and bewilder those looking in from the outside. Whether seen as sacred rites or peculiar customs, the practices of the LDS church offer a unique glimpse into the beliefs and rituals that shape the lives of its followers.

I've always heard the jokes about the magic underwear. This is the first I'm hearing about the secret handshake to get the bouncer angels to let you in the VIP section.

I have a friend that has essentially left the church, but his wife is still into it. He says its the only thing they ever argue about and the only source of stress in their relationship. Pretty sad. (PS he left when we was told an elder met with his very young daughter unsupervised - nothing happened but the fact that's even a possibility just flipped a switch in his head. Also, Elder just means any adult married man in the church - not like clergy. So any member of the church could do the same)

Checks notes...Mormons are f***ing weird. Got it

iamthemanwithnoname

This is weird as hell but fairly harmless I guess. I'm pretty sure Mormons do much worse things than this.

Let’s be honest: all religions are a cult.

I don't think it's any more weird than any other religion when you take a step back. Many major religions have special clothing and ceremonies.

Grew up in the church, I remember learning about this s*** and on top of everything else (questioning authority, sexuality, secularism, evolution and science) as an impressionable teen, I became ungovernable and refused to go back after my baptism/CTR b*******. Both sets of parents are still very into it, none of their children are.

As a former Roman Catholic, I found myself astounded at just how elaborate some other Christian/Christian-adjacent ceremonies could get once I started learning about them. This strikes me as one of the more exotic ones.
