I had a neighbor who was a retired engineering professor from Egypt. I helped them carry things upstairs when they moved into the building. They always invited me to dinners on Sundays for the three years they lived here. Nicest people I’ve ever met.

I need this in my life. Sure beats "Hot enough for you?"

Years ago I, an immigrant and a single mom, was working retail at a fancy store. I was folding sweaters after closing on the mezzanine level - a balcony above the main sales floor. Exhausted I leaned on the railing and just stared down. A coworker, i think she was East Asian, came by, gently touched my arm and said: How are you doing my queen? That's it. It was like a sun from the clouds! The way she said it, I felt like the queen of sweaters and jeans, and I suddenly saw my human value.

I try to do this with everyone everywhere I go. It doesn't always land, and sometimes I forget who I want to be and let an emotion dictate my behavior; but I think it's the intention and the effort that matter most. If I can make one person feel better about themselves, it's worth 1000 fumbles in the attempt.

My partner is like this with a he local coffee shop staff, it’s adorable. They call him the “HR guy” because he has gotten to know the staff well. Walking around the neighborhood with him is like walking with a celebrity sometimes because of the staff being excited to see him lol
