John Oliver, the beloved host of "Last Week Tonight," recently delivered an emotional acceptance speech that resonated deeply with viewers and pet lovers alike. During the awards ceremony, Oliver took a moment to thank an unexpected yet significant figure in his life—his dog.

In his speech, Oliver shared, "I also want to thank, it's going to be very silly, our dog. We had the most fantastic dog and she was at our wedding and she got us through a pandemic. She was with us for the two pregnancies and perfect choice of music. We had to say goodbye to her. And, uh... It is, I feel like Sarah McLaughlin right now. Uh... This... She was an amazing dog and, uh... Ouch. I would guess I want to, this isn't just for her, this is for all dogs. All dogs, you're all very good girls, you're very good boys, you all deserve a treat. Play me off now! Thanks so much."

The heartfelt tribute to his furry companion struck a chord with many, eliciting reactions that ranged from emotional to outright supportive. One user commented, "Not silly at all. Good boi deserves plaudits." Another praised the speech with a "14/10" rating, while some expressed their admiration for Oliver's candidness and love for his pet.

The speech not only highlighted Oliver's personal loss but also celebrated the unwavering companionship dogs provide. It was a reminder of the special bond shared between humans and their pets. As one user aptly put it, "I hugged our pup a little tighter at John's acceptance speech. I remember losing a good boy and had some old scars picked at that evening. Congrats, Oliver and crew! Now, if you'll excuse me I have treats to buy, walks to plan, and belly rubs to prepare."

John Oliver's tribute didn't just resonate with dog owners. It also sparked a conversation about the cultural nuances in language, with one comment humorously stating, "Don't bleep out the British. It's not just profanity when a Brit says f*** you, c***, b******s, w***er or arse. That's their national language and cultural heritage you're censoring. Censor American English speakers all you want, but let foreigners speak their native languages as they see fit. I'm only half kidding."

Such a raw and sincere moment on stage reminded everyone of the importance of acknowledging the simple joys and profound impacts pets have on our lives. Another user noted, "Boy I bet the person who started the play off felt really awkward after that."

John Oliver’s tribute was not just a testament to his dog but to all the pets that make our lives richer and more meaningful. As he pointed out, "All dogs, you're all very good girls, you're very good boys, you all deserve a treat."

Oliver’s speech has certainly left an indelible mark, making everyone appreciate their pets just a little bit more. It was a beautiful, genuine moment that celebrated the unconditional love and loyalty pets offer, reminding everyone that sometimes, the best tributes are the simplest ones.

Great speech, but how is Last Week Tonight a variety show? It was up against SNL. Also The Bear winning all the comedy awards is insane - Emmys weird.

mantabloke

have they not renamed that award to the john oliver award

Jon Stewart's tribute to his best boy, Dipper. Don't watch unless you have a dog nearby to hug: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ_A2BKCNDs

F***in loved Johns tribute to his dog but I also hate how quickly they play them off again award shows. Like make the filler bits shorter and let the f***ing award winners talk for a second
