yes but a few rich people can make a lot of money off them being in the prisons they own.

see but it's actually worse than that because in prison we also use them as slave labor.

They asked themselves "How can I get rich off of punishing the poors?" and private prisons was the answer.

Unfortunately this isn't true. Housing them in jails is somewhat expensive, but offset by the free slave labor you can get from them. For example, Target, McDonald’s, Walmart and Cargill used slave labor, and we're going to call it slave labor and not "prison labor", in their crop fields, slaughter houses, and factories. Not to mention, there's been more than a few judges found taking kickbacks to jail young adults at a higher rate to fuel this slave trade.

If you talk to these people, they actually do consider it a worthy expense. They're hell-bent on making sure that there's a flaming pit of spikes beneath every single tightrope a person has to walk in this life. Without bootstraps and the fear of punishment/failure, their entire system of ideals and principles falls apart. Escaping punishment is their personal motivator because seeing another person punished is how they know they're better than that person, which is what truly matters to them.

That money is charged to taxpayers. The people who own US prisons make massive amounts of money off of the slave labor all those prisons provide. It is extremely lucrative for them, there is no downside for them, only profit.
