In a compelling video titled "Always Be Careful with Phishing," viewers are cautioned about the potential hazards of scanning QR codes in public spaces. The video illustrates the difference between legitimate and fake QR codes, emphasizing how easy it is for scammers to overlay fraudulent codes on public devices, such as lamp post chargers.

One user expresses disbelief, saying, "I can’t believe yall are out here raw d*****g QR codes." This sentiment is echoed by several others who share their cautious approaches. For instance, one user mentions, "It makes me glad that my QR reader built into my phone tells me what the URL is before I can actually click it," highlighting the importance of verification tools.

Another significant concern raised is the ease with which QR codes can be manipulated. A commenter notes, "Yeah, I went to a parking lot where the only option was a QR code for paying. I looked at the sign and it was all legit, but it would take nothing to clone the payment portal and put up a QR code sticker over the legit sign."

The pervasive advice from the community is clear: "Don't scan anything in public." This caution is particularly important as some users point out that QR codes are just links you can't read, making them inherently risky. One user humorously states, "The only QR code I have ever scanned was for Pokemon Go," underscoring the selectiveness with which some approach QR code usage.

The video and subsequent discussion serve as a crucial reminder of the dangers lurking behind seemingly innocuous QR codes. Whether it's a lamp post charger or a parking payment portal, the consensus is unanimous: always be vigilant and verify before scanning any QR code.

Do not scan QR codes.

Don't scan any QR code outside, not even if it wasn't a sticker on top of the sign.

My personal phone doesn't seem to be able to read/recognize QR codes, and my work phone has a pop-up that tells me/previews what URL a QR code would take me to... for those that simply go wherever a QR code takes them simply boggles my mind.

Alternatively: don't use QR codes period. QR codes are just links you can't read. And yes I do realize the irony here cuz lots of banking systems use QR nowadays for logins and stuff like that.
