A viral image featuring a puffin has ignited a lively debate about the ownership and regulation of cable and fiber networks. The image, which is trending on Imgur, shows a puffin walking gracefully on a grassy surface. Its striking appearance, with a large, colorful beak and bright orange webbed feet, captures attention immediately. However, it is the bold white text overlaying the image that has stirred significant discussion online.

The text on the image reads:

Top: "CABLE AND FIBER NETWORKS SHOULD BE PUBLICLY OWNED."

Bottom: "THE INTERNET IS TOO IMPORTANT TO DEMOCRACY TO ALLOW WEALTHY CORPORATIONS TO CONTROL IT."

This powerful message resonates with many individuals who are frustrated by the current state of internet and utility services. One user passionately commented, "All utility companies should be owned by the rate payers," reflecting a common sentiment that essential services should not be controlled by profit-driven corporations.

Another user pointed out the challenges in the current system, saying, "Where I’m at, wealthy corporations not only own the internet, but also water and electric utilities. There are claims they are regulated but the rate and the profits they post say that the regulators have been captured and the utilities are effectively unregulated."

The debate extends to the accessibility and reliability of services. A user from Sacramento shared a positive experience with a community-owned utility company, SMUD, noting, "It's community-owned and not for profit. It can still be expensive, but when we had floods and prolonged outages, they put us up in a hotel and reimbursed us for our food that spoiled."

In contrast, others highlight the inefficiencies and failings of government-owned internet services. A seasoned professional in the industry remarked, "I’ve been in the ISP business since 1998 as a network guy. Seen come and go. Not always, but usually government-owned internet fails badly."

The discussion also touches on historical precedents and the broader implications for democracy. One user lamented, "It's almost like net neutrality was important and not enough people voted for it. We're in the 'find out' part now."

This image and the ensuing debate underscore a critical issue: the balance between public ownership and private enterprise in managing vital infrastructure. While opinions vary, the consensus is clear—there is an urgent need for a more equitable and efficient system that prioritizes public access and democratic values.

The puffin meme serves as a compelling reminder of the power of visual content in driving conversation and bringing attention to important social issues. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how communities and policymakers will address the challenges of internet and utility ownership in the future.

Where I’m at, wealthy corporations not only own the internet, bit also water and electric utilities. There are claims they are regulated but rate and the profits they post say that the regulators have been captured and the utilities are effectively unregulated. Because of this, I think utilities cannot be run by a corporation at all. But this is America where we have have switch from aristocrats to oligarchs and rule by the mandate of heaven to by virtue of the ‘free market’.

We paid for the freeway and they charge us for the offramp.

I have municipal fiber where I live and it's great. Cheaper than Comcast, waaaaaaaaay more reliable, no data cap, and a person actually answers the phone when you call them. F*** Comcast.

I feel like municipal fiber is a solid idea. Of course communities have tried and were sued by greedy f***ers. So... Yeah. Need to overturn precedent. Or dissolve some CEOs in acid. I don't know

I live in Sacramento and my utility company is SMUD. It's community owned and not for profit. It can still be expensive, but when we had floods and prolonged outages they put us up in a hotel and reimbursed us for our food that spoiled. It was a simple process at a pretty stressful time. I can't imagine the same would happen with PG&E.

Chattanooga did a good job of making citywide fiber with their electric company. It's fast, it's cheap, and it made the city nearly 3 billion dollars of profit. Can you guess how much the other fiber companies are making in profit?

Internet just like our rail system should have never been made private. It belongs to the citizens of the United States.
