A recent tweet by Alex Cole, a verified user with the handle @acnewsitics, has ignited a fervent discussion on social media about the safety and implications of drag queen story time for children. The tweet, which reads, "For reference, exactly zero kids have died this year from being read to by a drag queen," has garnered widespread reactions and generated intense debate.

Alex Cole's tweet, accompanied by a small profile picture and a black background, brings attention to the ongoing discourse surrounding drag queen story hours—a program where drag queens read to children in libraries and other community spaces.

The tweet's straightforward message highlights the safety of these events, contrasting them with other concerns some individuals have about children's well-being. Comments on the post reflect a wide range of opinions, including one user who remarked, "And zero kids have come back from school with gender-affirming surgery... a lot of kids have not come back at all... and had to be identified by their sneakers." This comment underscores the tragic reality of school shootings, drawing a stark comparison to the perceived dangers of drag queen story hours.

Another user humorously questioned, "how many dead from that one trans kid on a swim team several states away though," poking fun at the disproportionate fear some people have regarding the presence of transgender individuals in sports and other activities.

The tweet also prompted a more serious reflection from a commenter who said, "Kids die every year as a result of being pushed too hard in the heat by their HS coaches, yet we still have HS sports programs. If one single solitary child died as a result of Art class, there wouldn’t be a single Art class in the country the next day," highlighting the inconsistency in societal fears and responses.

Moreover, the discussion veered into political territory, with comments like, "Current messaging from trump/Vance is that it's better kids get shot than be transgender. Their supporters love it." This comment critiques the stance of certain political figures and their supporters on issues of gun control and LGBTQ+ rights.

A particularly poignant comment read, "I don't understand the fear over the drag queen book readings. We had them when I was a kid almost 30 years ago at my local library and not a soul was hurt! I remember they in fact helped one of the kids in my class who was in the closet to feel better about being open about who they were." This personal anecdote provides a counter-narrative, emphasizing the positive impact such events can have on children's self-acceptance and inclusivity.

While the tweet by Alex Cole may seem simple, it has undoubtedly opened a Pandora's box of societal issues, from gun violence and LGBTQ+ rights to the role of education and community programs. As the conversation continues, it remains crucial to consider the diverse perspectives and experiences that shape public opinion on these topics.

My best related bar conversation compared drag book readings to motorcycle toy runs. "Okay so they're maligned by society, so they're choosing to do good things within the scope of their identity so people understand that they care about their communities. Sure, both a drag book reading and a toy run are mostly silly pageantry, but the idea is the same. They wanna show that they care while expressing an aspect of who they are." I saw the light go on in some rando's eyes it was great.
