#20 The real reason is that pre-smart phone and Internet, bar bets about random trivia couldn't be easily settled. They saw a niche waiting to be filled, and thus when you ordered Guinness for your bar, you could get their little book of (I think originally mostly sports) world records to settle arguments. It just got so popular that it eventually spun off into its own company.
