Blame Billionaires, Not Immigrants: A Critical Look at Food Price Inflation

A recent image circulating online has sparked a heated discussion about the true causes of rising food prices. The poster, affixed to a metal surface, carries a powerful message: "CAN'T AFFORD FOOD? BLAME BILLIONAIRES NOT IMMIGRANTS." This call to action directly challenges popular narratives about inflation and immigrant labor, urging the public to scrutinize corporate practices instead.

The poster highlights that in 2023, grocery stores doubled their profits, despite inflation increasing by only 7%. Meanwhile, food prices soared by nearly 11.5%, suggesting that the price hikes are more about corporate greed than actual economic necessity. The image specifically calls out Galen Weston, CEO of Loblaws and NoFrills, noting that it would take a grocery worker 340 years to earn what Weston profits in a single year.

Commentary on the post reveals widespread frustration. One user remarked on the illusion of competition created by conglomerates like Loblaws, which owns multiple grocery chains such as Zehrs, No Frills, Valumart, and Superstore. This consolidation limits true market competition, contributing to price manipulation. Another comment pointed out how some CEOs earn more in a day than minimum wage workers do in an entire year, further emphasizing the wealth disparity.

The discussion also touches on the labor shortage caused by reduced immigration during the pandemic, which affected industries like food processing and agriculture. However, the poster and many commenters argue that blaming immigrants for high prices is a diversion from the real issue: corporate greed.

In an era where economic inequality is becoming more pronounced, the poster's message resonates with many. It urges people to focus their frustration on billionaires who profit disproportionately, rather than scapegoating immigrant workers who often face difficult conditions themselves.

The image serves as a reminder that the narrative around inflation and food prices is complex. It calls for a deeper understanding of the economic forces at play and encourages holding those in power accountable. As people continue to grapple with the cost of living crisis, this message is more relevant than ever.

Tesco (UK's biggest supermarket) posted a 160% increase on profits this year whilst also claiming that price pressures have eased 'substantially' amid the current cost of living crisis. So it's no longer "inflation" but blatant Greed-flation (has been all along)

A big part of inflation (in addition to corporate greed) was the fact we had almost no immigrants for a year and a half causing a huge labor shortage in areas like food processing, agriculture, warehousing, construction, and other industries.

Loblaws is a conglomerate that s***** up a majority of the grocery chains. Zehrs, No Frills, Valumart, superstore (to name a few). They maintain an illusion of competition, when in reality, there is only two chains. As we head into an election, I would love to see a party campaign on divesting major grocery chains to reinvigorate competition. That’s the only way to solve the problem in my eyes. F*** Loblaws and f*** Galen Weston. P************.

if you want to put up your own: https://springmag.ca/posters-blame-billionaires-not-immigrants I plan to make a US variant slamming Warren Buffett; I'm still p***ed he has 1 trillion. most people never see one million, and can't actually truthfully fathom one billion, but human minds simply cannot rationalize how honestly insurmountably gargantuan one trillion is. Picturing it is just not what our brains were meant for, so it's frustratingly hard to get people as upset as they should be.

Apparently, some CEOs earn more every day than minimum wage workers do all year.

Galen Weston should be hauled in front of parliament in prime time & made to answer some very hard questions

I've never heard anyone here blaming immigrants for high food prices, but then again I don't live in Alberta.

Loblaws needs a big ol’ disaster of Eaton proportions to happen to it.
