An image that has recently gone viral on Imgur is striking a chord with many due to its poignant representation of the student loan crisis. The image features a young child, visibly upset, wiping away tears with a closed fist in an indoor setting. The background is out of focus, emphasizing the child's distress.

Overlaying the image is satirical text that reads, "I LOANED 60K TO A TEENAGER AND THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY ME BACK 220K AFTER 8% CAPITALIZED INTEREST OVER 30 YEARS." This statement humorously yet bitterly encapsulates the struggles faced by many with student loans, highlighting the enormous financial burden that compounded interest places on borrowers over time.

The comments on the image reflect a wide range of reactions, from shared frustrations to personal anecdotes about the crippling effect of student loans. One user highlights the predatory nature of these loans, stating, "I paid a little over double what I borrowed. As long as you're paying it off on THEIR 'income-contingent plan,' none of your monthly payments will ever be applied to the principle loan; only to interest." This sentiment is echoed by another comment, "I took $40k, I paid $40k, I owed $40k before I got PSLF thanks to Biden. I thought I was going to carry it forever."

Further comments delve into the systemic issues that perpetuate this cycle of debt. One user remarks, "Community college, at least, should be paid for like high school. It is in our own best interests to have an educated financially-unencumbered populace." Another user criticizes the economic structure, saying, "They don't want to get paid back. They want to keep a constant revenue stream. If they can keep someone paying $500/mo for the rest of their life, that's an amazing revenue stream."

There is also a significant amount of support for recent efforts to alleviate student debt. A comment notes, "As of May this year the Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven $167 billion in student loans for 4.75 million Americans," referencing the ongoing political battle over student loan forgiveness.

The image and its comments collectively underscore a critical socio-economic issue that resonates with millions. It serves as a reminder of the pressing need for reform in how education is financed, emphasizing the moral and financial implications of the current system. The widespread reaction to this image on Imgur demonstrates the deep and pervasive frustration felt by those burdened by student loans, as well as the urgent need for actionable solutions.

Student loans are a stain. But so is a system that requires that much money for an education.

I paid a little over double what I borrowed. As long as you're paying it off on THEIR "income-contingent plan," none of your monthly payments will ever be applied to the principle loan; only to interest, which you will never catch up with (that's why they get to write the terms). Interest constantly amortizes and the principle just grows. Only when I received 2 different inheritances and dumped all of it into getting them off my back was I able to get ahead of the curve and pay most of it down.

What do I care? I already bundled all those loans and sold them off to private equity who used the assets to buy out a bunch of successful business and sell off their assets while doing stock buy-backs for themselves. Meanwhile I put my earnings from the original loans into something with an excellent rate or return: SuperPACs. Everybody wins!

FWIW - As of May this year the Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven $167 billion in student loans for 4.75 million Americans. In spite of the GOP lawsuits attempting to block all student loan forgiveness.
