An image circulating on social media has sparked intense debate about the legacy of the Baby Boomer generation. The text on the image reads, "There's an old saying, 'A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in.' The Boomer's great grandparents planted trees they never sat in the shade of. The Boomer's grandparents planted trees they never sat in the shade of. The Boomer's parents planted trees they never sat in the shade of. The Boomers clear cut the forest to build themselves second homes, boats, and to sell the lumber for more money, and have the audacity to blame their children for their own avarice."

This provocative statement has elicited a wide range of responses, reflecting the complexities and nuances of generational contributions and failures.

One user commented, "Don't go getting nostalgic. Boomers' great grandparents dumped toxic waste in rivers, employed children in child-crushing factories, and denied the human rights of everybody. They clear-cut forests too. The fact there's no old-growth forest on this continent is testament to that."

Another perspective highlighted the positive contributions of Boomers, stating, "The Boomers created the environmental movement, tried to save the whales, tried to stop acid rain, banned CFCs to restore the ozone layer, introduced widespread recycling, ended Apartheid in South Africa, passed the Civil Rights Act, and more."

Others pointed out that blaming a single generation is overly simplistic. "It’s not about 'generations'. It’s about people and the environment in which they were raised. There are good and bad people from 10 to 100. Stop trying to blame a single group."

The discourse also touched on the infrastructural achievements and subsequent failures of the Boomers. "After the second world war, the greatest generation built massive infrastructure. The Boomers used all those things, cut funding to maintain/repair/replace it, and now here we are way behind on upkeep."

Amidst the generational blame game, some comments called for a focus on the real issues. "This is rampant ageism, and a distraction from the real conflict, class warfare."

The image and its accompanying text have undoubtedly ignited a complex and multifaceted conversation. It serves as a reminder that every generation has its share of both contributions and shortcomings. As society continues to evolve, such discussions are crucial for understanding the past and shaping a better future.

Don't go getting nostalgic. Boomers' great grandparents dumped toxic waste in rivers, employed children in child-crushing factories, and denied the human rights of everybody. They clear-cut forests too. The fact there's no old-growth forest on this continent is testament to that. The "Greatest Generation" flew in combat with the Tuskegee Airmen and then kicked them out of the diner and red-lined their districts.

Eh, i've met plenty of good boomers. The real problem are the people in power, same as it ever was.

It’s not about “generations”. It’s about people and the environment in which they were raised. There are good and s***ty people from 10 to 100. F*** off with trying to blame a single group. People s***.

After the second world war. The greatest generation built massive infrastructure They built freeways, bridges, water and sewer pipes etc. The boomers used all those things, cut funding to maintain/repair/replace it, and now here we are way behind on upkeep while the boomers who let s*** fall apart are complaining that its broken and still unwilling to raise taxes to pay for it.

Eat the rich, so they don't have to

Oh god this c*** again?! You think that the people that came before the boomers were better?! Would you like to be gay, a minority, a child, a woman in the 1930s? Even at the time they thought they were modern. The boomers changed a lot of things for the better and you’re mad at most of them because they bought a house before you even existed.

Let’s all fight between age groups. That will really help us. Let’s s*** on the 43% of boomers that vote blue! That will make things better. Racism sucks. Sexism sucks, but ageism! That’s where it’s at. Sometimes I think people are too stupid to survive.

The Boomers created the environmental movement, tried to save the whales, tried to stop acid rain, banned CFCs to restore the ozone layer, introduced widespread recycling, ended Apartheid in South Africa, passed the Civil Rights Act, and more. The world is just more complex than humans can engineer. Every well-intentioned action will have myriad negative consequences permeating the globe for generations after. Right now we're just in the moment when most Boomers' negatives have manifested.

They weren’t called The “Me Generation”’for nothing. I’m Gen Jones. The dip after. We got to see them enjoy themselves and then watched the doors close in our faces. Longing = “jones-ing”.
