A recent post on the subreddit r/Showerthoughts has sparked a lively debate about the common morning ritual of drinking coffee. The post, which has garnered 6.3k upvotes and 232 comments, states, "People who say not to talk to them before their morning coffee are basically saying that they're unpleasant to be around when they're not under the influence of drugs."

This thought-provoking statement has led to a variety of reactions from Reddit users. One top comment with 2.1k upvotes offers a counter-perspective: "Unless what they are really saying is that you're unpleasant to be around, until they are under the influence of drugs..."

The conversation dives deep into the idea of caffeine dependency and how it affects morning interactions. One user humorously noted, "When I say not to talk to me before I've had my morning coffee it is more because I'm on that knife's edge between being a coffee drinker and a murderer." Another user added, "Yes, I do need my drug before I can properly function in the morning. Telling you this & respectfully asking to refrain from conversation until I've had my coffee or tea is me requesting you respect my boundary."

The debate also touches on the societal expectations placed on "morning people." A user commented, "We gave morning people way too much power over the world," while another shared, "It's really just that mornings s***. Gotta get into your groove before you can start the day and deal with interpersonal relationships."

Some users shared their personal morning routines, emphasizing the importance of their coffee ritual. One user wrote, "Making a coffee and taking the first sip before starting my work day is a form of meditation for me. It's not about being pleasant or not. It's the ritual I need to start my work day."

The discussion also highlighted the prevalence of caffeine consumption. "When people ask ‘what’s the most abused substance?’ I always bring up caffeine because as a heavy user myself it’s never brought up that most of the population uses way more than recommended every single day probably since they were teenagers," one user pointed out.

The post and its comments reflect a broader conversation about the role of caffeine in daily life and how it influences behavior and social interactions. Whether one views coffee as a necessary morning boost or a socially accepted drug, the debate on Reddit certainly provides food for thought.

Making a coffee and taking the first sip before starting my work day is a form of meditation for me. It's not about being pleasant or not. It's the ritual I need to start my work day. Some people like to sit in traffic or listen to music/read a book in transit. Some close their eyes and meditate.

With me its "This job requires me to be here and awake a full 5 hours before I would naturally wake up. My brain hardly functions before noon. At least let me artificially wake up with what is honestly about a liter of coffee before you try to read or write to my meat computer."

The original poster comes across like a 13 year old who hasn't had to deal with the real world trying to throw shade.

Coffee is as much a drug as cocaine is a mild stimulant.
